Project Characteristics and Results
Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples
In this project, we will empower the people of Punta Negra. They are already familiar with the benefits of solar energy, and so villagers have volunteered to contribute land, 75% of labor and transportation, and 50+% discount at a guest house for the project activities. All households will be involved in capacity-building workshops from local experts to ensure that everyone understands the
phenomenon of climate change and benefits of solar energy. The village has formed a Power Board made up of 7 members. Also, residents have already agreed to pay a reasonable fee for their power.
The Power Board will administer the funds collected with oversight by the Ministry of Rural
Transformation and Community Development. At project end, residents will be surveyed to determine how satisfied they are with the project and with their electric systems. Residents of the village will be part of this project from beginning to end, including as part of the Project Steering Committee.
Gender Focus
Punta Negra has a female chairperson, and the interim Solar Power Board is majority
female. BPCL is led by indigenous women, particularly by Chair of the Board, Miriam Choc.
This project will build on these positive gender models, as these women demonstrate active,
non-traditional leadership roles for women. The technicians appointed by the Board will be
50+% women.
