1. The basic database in the form of ecological realities, extent of pollution both spatially and temporally, socioeconomic surveys of selected settlements, hotel information surveys, tourism information surveys were the activities undertaken to address the first objective of the project.

2. Social organization in three villages and four Tehsil of Swat was carried out to strengthen existing CBOs and to form and capacitate new Organizations. Solid and liquid waste management activities were carried out with some of the CBOs through the concept of component share. In the solid waste management more than 80% of the share was born by the communities.

3. Strengthening of River Swat Protection Cell (RSPC) was another achievement of RSCP. This forum proved to be a pivot for prevention of illegal construction along the river, illegal hunting and fishing practices. The Cell also provided opportunity for working with government functionaries.

4. The task of zoning and planning was one of the objectives of the project which was done in a specified area of Kalam with the assistance of the Technical Unit of EPS. The zoning and planning was carried out through Participatory Planning Process in which the local people and other stakeholders were actively involved.

5. Awareness raising campaigns were the integral parts of RSCP. In this connection seminars and workshops of local and national level, clean up activities on important days related to environment were organized at appropriate intervals of the project period. Educational material in the form of handbills, brochures, sign boards and video film were developed and widely circulated.

6. Some of the problems which the river face are due to lack of coordination among the various stakeholders. This aspect was addressed since the inception of the idea of the project. The team of the project was successful to a greater extent to establish coordination among the stakeholders, coordination among the government departments (including EPA, NWFP), hotel owners and the communities. This coordination proved to be very fruitful in carrying out the activities of the project and the origination of innovative ideas for further work. Coordination with donors like TVO and other NGOs like WWF-P was also the outcome of the project.

7. Besides the achievement of the project objective, RSCP was successful to address to some of the recommendations of the stakeholders. These included the development of sanitation master plan for the city of Mingawara. This huge task was accomplished by RSCP in collaboration with the Technical Unit of EPS. Details of this master plan are now ready for submission to donor for assistance in the form of a proposal. Another extra-objective activity achieved by the project was the formulation of rules and regulations for the conservation of River Swat. The draft of the ordinance was prepared by RSPC and submitted to Government of NWFP. The ordinance is now extended to all the parts of the NWFP under the name of ?NWFP Rivers Protection Act 2002?. If properly implemented in the local context the Act will help in the conservation of River Swat. The third activity which did not form part of the objectives as such was the sanitation scheme in village Chalyar. The liquid waste management activity was carried out with the CBO of Chalyar, which was capacitated to the extent that Trust for Voluntary Organization (TVO) provided part of the financial assistant for the project. The technical support was provided by EPS.
