Promote Community-Owned Technology to Reduce CO2 from Burning Rice Straw and Corn Waste in Kham district, Xiengkhouang province.
Rice straw and maize waste are among the most important residues generated in the community, and their management varies widely. Open burning of straw is a common practice in rice straw and maize waste management in Laos, especially in the north. However, the emission factors of carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH4), N2O, and volatile organic carbon (excluding methane) are greatly increased by ruminants and burning. The burning of rice straw and corn waste in open fields is known to have negative impacts on the environment and agriculture by polluting the air and affecting soil quality. Therefore, promoting the use of appropriate technologies to reduce CO2 emissions from the burning of rice straw and corn waste in Ban Huat, Kham district, Xiengkhouang province will help protect the environment from climate change by reducing CO2 emissions from the burning of rice straw and corn waste, and also promote gender equality in communities to use rice straw as animal feed, for mushroom cultivation and as fertilizer, as well as develop products through appropriate technologies to process rice straw and corn waste as new sources of income for agriculture. The project aims to protect the community, establish rules and regulations for the burning of rice straw and maize waste; promote gender-based communities, use rice straw and maize waste as animal feed, to grow charcoal mushrooms, and as soil fertilizer; develop products using appropriate technologies to technologies to process rice straw and maize waste to increase farmers' income.
