Improve Awareness and Knowledge of Waste Management in the Community and Make Crafts from Recycled Materials.
Waste management especially plastic is becoming an increasingly visible problem as public areas become littered with waste through careless neglect of collect disposal. The idea is to involve disabled people in a strategy to deal with the very topical issue. Through a programme of educational workshops, the disabled community will be able to show a good example of correct waste management and recycling to able bodied people. Issues of pollution will include environmental damage, damage to wildlife, dangers of pollutants entering the food chain and unnecessary costs of producing disposable plastic goods, packaging, and containers. The programme will include awareness of chemical hazards to do with waste management, also hazards from burning plastics, Styrofoam food containers polystyrene packing etc. The Information for Education and Communication (IEC) materials will be mostly picture based and self-explanatory so that people with poor reading skills, poor language skills, as in the case of some minorities and poor eyesight can still benefit. The project aims to create original IEC educational materials to improve knowledge and awareness of the hazards of waste, and to improve waste management and recycling of household materials where possible. Lectures to participants on waste management and recycling in workshops with specialized trainers. Teaching specific skills for making handicrafts from recycled materials, as well as marketing and promotion to enable members to run a small business or cooperative.
