Capacity Development for a Group of Cattle Fatteners and Sustainable Habitat Conservation in Beungkietngong Ramsar Site.
Capacity Development for a Group of Cattle Fatteners and Sustainable Habitat Conservation in Beungkietngong Ramsar Site.
Beugnkiat Ngong is in Pathumphon district, Champasak province and is connected to Xepien National Park. It is surrounded by 7 villages such as Kiat Ngong, Thopsork, Phommalue, Phapho, Nongmakek, Phukkha and Phalai with 9,397 people. The area around Ramsa River, Beungkiet Ngong, is an ecologically important area with great biodiversity, including wild and aquatic animals that are threatened with extinction. The results of monitoring by the navigation system to record birds and fish and installing camera traps for animals in Ramsa, Kiet Ngong and surrounding areas in 2019-2020 revealed 51 bird species and 54 fish species, including species that live in swamps and species that migrate seasonally to spawn, breed and find food in the dry season. Agricultural production, especially rice cultivation, is the main source of income for the 7 villages around Beungkiet Ngong, and there are more than 6,000 large animals such as cows and buffaloes. Raising large animals naturally has affected the natural grasslands and protected areas, disturbing and degrading the biodiversity habitat. The promotion of cattle breeding not only aims to transform natural breeding into controlled breeding, with the creation of pasture and supplementary feed to exploit the potential of the community to build a family economy and improve people's livelihoods, but also to help reduce pressure on natural grasslands and biodiversity habitats. The project aims to further strengthen the cattle breeding group by advancing the production of beef (quality) in Nam Ramsa, Beungkiatngong, as well as expand the cattle group to build a long-term foundation for the sustainability of the production group in the Ramsa area.
