Planning grant for eradication of bear baiting
To develop a management plan for reducing the incidence of bear baiting and train Qalanders in alternate professions.
The major activities of the project included:
Collect available published and unpublished information on all aspects of bear species of Pakistan.
Convene a meeting of organizations concerned with conservation of bear and its ecosystem to finalize the strategy for development of management plan,
Ascertain bear baiting events arranged at various places in the country.
Survey the socioeconomic and other factors responsible for continuity of captive bears and bear dancing.
Ascertain views of the active participants i.e. viewers, organizers, kallanders, landlords, dog owners interested in bear baiting and bear dancing.
Study and discover possible alternatives to eradicate bear baiting.
Survey bear habitats to ascertain general status of bears and specific threats faced by these species.
Ascertain views of local population for bear conservation and its ecosystem. Also find possibilities of participation of local communities to conserve bear and its ecosystem. Ascertain from Revenue Department if 3-7 marIa plots and houses constructed for Bihari refuges during Junejo Regime are available for rehabilitation of kallanders.
Compile the information and data on bears and their ecosystem collected from various sources, seminars and field
Prepare the management plan
Organize a workshop to present the first draft to experts.
Present the plan to the concerned provincial governments and the federal government for review, approval and implementation.

The project will strive to develop a comprehensive management plan for eradicating bear baiting in Pakistan and will recommend measures to provide alternate livelihoods to the people engaged in bear baiting and bear dancing.
