Community Crocodile Conservation in Doneyanong Village, Xonnaboury District, Savannakhet Province
Doneyanong village is located near Nong Luang wetland, which relates to Xe Champhone wetland (Ramsar site). There are 131 households, 180 families, with 985 inhabitants. Their main occupation is farming and livestock, followed by using natural resources as a source of food and income such as fishing and collecting non-timber products for sale. Both wetlands support a wide variety of aquatic and wildlife species, as well as various non-timber forest products. Crocodile conservation is not only about conserving endangered species, but also about including wetlands, which are important aquatic and wildlife habitat for biodiversity management. However, current trends show that wetlands that provide habitat for the crocodile have been destroyed on a large scale. This has a direct impact on native crocodile populations and other aquatic biodiversity species. The project aims to help the community sustainably protect crocodile and other wetland resources while improving the quality of life for local people. Therefore, the main activity is to educate the local communities on the importance of biodiversity, especially the native crocodile species in the area. This is important as it contributes to the mitigation of global climate change. The other main activity is to improve the sustainable livelihoods of the community.
