Towards Establishing a Sustainable Apiculture Industry in the OECS
This is a multi-country OECS policy project initiated and managed by the GEF SGP UNDP. The goal of this project is to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Apiculture Industry in the OECS and its effective management by people of the sub-region. The objectives are as follows: (i) To undertake a comprehensive economic study of the Apiculture industry and to determine its growth potential and benefits to the people of the OECS; (ii) To draft, finalize, approve and promote an OECS Policy for Apiculture, which will guide its development, trade and long-term sustainability; (iii) To prepare and approve a two-year workplan in Apiculture for the OECS, which will ensure that the industry remains sustainable and owned by its people (iv) To garner support from the Ministers of Agriculture for MARLI as a centre of excellence for research, innovation and learning in the OECS.; (v) To design and implement a public awareness Programme, which promotes the protection and sustainability of the apiculture industry in Saint Lucia and the OECS; (vi) To organise and convene a Ministers of Agriculture Meeting that focuses on the establishment of a framework for the sustainable development of Apiculture in the OECS; and (vi) To establish an effective project management unit comprising of staff from the OECS and GEF SGP UNDP.

Capacity - Building Component
.As per the project document the grantee has identified community outreach as a capacity deficit. Through the mentoring strategy used, the GEF SGP UNDP will assist the grantee in developing such skills. The group is also charged by the NSC to develop a capacity development plan, which includes young people, for review and consideration for funding.
