Crossover Community Sanitation and Mangrove Rehabilitation project
Project aims to improve health and sanitation for its community members by improving the mangrove ecosystem?s biodiversity and to increase our communities? readiness for natural disasters such as tsunami and king tides. Currently the community is still using open defecation in the mangrove area which is not only inconvenient for those who are old and sick but, it is also harmful to the mangrove ecosystem including marine life that depend on the mangrove for food, mating and nursery. Not only that but the density of the mangrove forest is also decreasing quite drastically which means that the canopy is very much open and so are the distances between the trees whose root systems are supposed to function as filter between the land and the sea. Given the degrading condition, the mangrove will no longer shield the village from natural disasters such as tsunami which means that our community is currently vulnerable to such natural disasters.
The general objective is to first ensure that proper toilets are available for families before work to rehabilitate the mangrove forest especially the areas which have been heavily degraded as a result of indiscriminate cutting and totally restrict it from open defecation.
Key activities include:
1. Conduct awareness on health, sanitation and the importance of the mangrove ecosystem.
2. Acquire materials for building of proper lavatory facilities in our communities.
3. Construct proper lavatory facilities at different locations in our communities.
4. Conduct training on mangrove replanting to build capacity in the communities.
5. Roll out the mangrove replanting program at degraded areas in the mangrove forest.
6. Create an adaptive management plan for monitoring and evaluation of the mangrove
rehabilitation program.
