Establishing the nexus between indigenous fishing knowledge and contemporary methods: an innovative approach to addressing climate change and sustainability challenges in resource utilization in Solomon Islands
The project focuses on understanding traditional fishing methods to identify innovative methods and propose enhanced alternatives that meet contemporary demands and mitigate prevailing threats and challenges. The overarching objectives are: 1) document traditional fishing knowledge; 2) propose enhanced alternative techniques that are easily acceptable, accessible, and adaptable by local communities; and 3) identify mechanisms that conserve and preserve fishing grounds and the fish habitat. Specifically, the project anticipates to fuse Indigenous Fishing Knowledge and Modern Scientific Techniques to propose alternatives that promote efficient resource management and utilization, and are particularly relevant to local contexts where resources are threatened due to over harvesting, loss of species diversity (as a result of climate change), and introduction of invasive species
Objective is To understand traditional fishing methods and how they can be improved to meet contemporary demands and mitigate threats posed by climate change on fishing grounds.
Project components are;
1. Documentation of Indigenous Fishing Knowledge.
2. Education on stock conservation and fishing grounds preservation
3. Development of sustainable fishing gear in the provinces. - Gria?a, Oko and Aohe traditional fishing gears documented.
4. Three (3) fishing communities educated in conservation and preservation.
5. Sustain fishing gears in three (3) provinces developed.
6. Literature Review
7. Visiting local communities, consultation and project tools design.
8. Data Analysis
9. Writing (Papers, Technical report, and book manuscripts)
10. Gear design
11. Education and empowerment of local communities in indigenous fishing knowledge.
12. Present traditional and modified fishing gears to National Museum and Archives
Expected outputs are:
1) proposed and tested enhanced alternative fishing techniques.
2) introduced stock conservation techniques.
3) community interest in preserving indigenous knowledge strengthened.
4) knowledge about new techniques disseminated locally.
4) at least 2 publications in peer reviewed journals.
5) a book published, with internationally recognized publisher.
