A joint effort to protect from coastal erosion by a resilient community in Anse Kerlan, Praslin island
A joint effort to protect from coastal erosion by a resilient community in Anse Kerlan, Praslin island
Climate change remains a defining challenge of our time; The impacts of climate change are
increasingly felt around the globe. In 2018 most of the natural hazards that affected nearly 62
million people were associated with extreme weather and climate events. The fourteen families dwelling along the immediate coastal belt of Anse Kerlan, with significant economic activities in the area, are exposed to sea level rise and tidal surges exacerbating severe coastal erosion, facing loss of coastal socio-economic and ecological value of the area. Following a decade of intensive surveys and actions by some private property owners and the Anse Kerlan CBO, through grants, private and Government assistance along the Anse Kerlan coastline to protect properties and public infrastructure along 1300m stretch of land identified for action, a small gap of 40m is now remaining, allowing for better use of funds to fully benefit vulnerable residents on the agreed sites. They have
established the baseline for continued protection of the site with the laying out of an initial
counter-erosion structure and evaluated its effectiveness and the resilience of
both the structure and the ecosystem from storm surges and related coastal erosion. It was then
observed that for the entire 40m stretch of the rock armouring, there is continued evidence of
erosion and scouring, as a result of receding water from wave overtopping action. thus requiring additional support to improve the protection structure and increase vegetation cover on the selected site, while strengthening the resilience of the community and the ecosystem, for lasting protection impacts and disaster risk reduction.
