Climate Resilience Building in Pangai Project
Pangai is the main town in the island group of Haapai and homes majority of the population of the islands of Haapai. The settlement is divided into two areas and borders the community of Hihifo to the west, the second most populated settlement in Haapai. The settlement is located on the lowest elevation of the island is vulerable. Many interested donors have scoped projects for Pangai and have come to the conculsion that the community will need to resettle elsewhere, otherwise the risk is too high for the investment. The grant here is provided for the community. Albeit the geolocation of the settlement, the population will need to adapt to the severe impacts they are currently facing. The grant is commited to the village for adaptation activities that they will need to better prepare themselves for the upcoming huricane seasons and long-term solutions to issues currently seen in the village such as droughts and food security. The relocation of the settlement may not be forthcoming in the next decade but the annual impacts of sea level rise is very apperent in Pangai, coast revegetation of native plants and building resilience in water management are the main focal areas of this grants.
