CRY FREEDOM: SEA TURTLE PROTECTION AND CONSERVATION AWARENESS
The vision of the Cry Freedom project is to produce a first sea turtle conservation documentary
from Seychelles which will show the current status and trend of sea turtles over the years, on the
main granitic islands and possible status on selected outer islands of Seychelles. This will
hopefully help to bring about positive change in the Seychelles current and future generations
towards sea turtle conservation and to gradually abandon the tradition turtle Meat consumption
as a delicacy. The documentary will not only raise awareness on the different issues faced by Sea
Turtle, including coastal erosion of beaches, but unregulated development of coastlines also
making them unsuitable for nesting, plastic trash and other pollutants in the sea which entangle
and poison sea turtles. Illegal killing of sea turtles (especially killing of females at the nesting
beaches), despite existence of laws protecting the species, lighting pollution adjacent to nesting
beaches which frighten females and disorient hatchlings. Moreover, the documentary will outline
the value of turtle as the Seychelles flagship species. Most importantly the documentary aims to
nurture conservationism in the younger generation through rehabilitation, turtle watch activities,
inspiring them to become advocates to keep supporting this cause and continue our hard work
towards protecting sea turtles. The end product of the project will be a feature film and three
short videos documenting the work of the country in sea turtle conservation.
