Local Livelihood Project
Both the coconut tree crabs and the coastline residence are vulnerable to the impacts of natural disaster. During the Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha?apai (HTHH) volcanic eruption, the residence along the coastline of Tonga and Ha?apai were damaged by the natural disaster including the plant and animal biodiversity in these affected areas. This posed a national issue in safeguarding the organisms found in the local biodiversity especially for those that are few in numbers such as the coconut tree crabs. Tonga is vulnerable to climate change as natural disasters such as cyclones and sea surges can be observed in a yearly basis. This project will assist in reviving the coconut tree crabs in these affected areas, and in turn the outcome of the project will produce an alternative local livelihood for the vulnerable communities in the coastlines. The result of this project will be a sustainable effort to co-habitat the coastline areas in Tonga.
