Sustainable Land management through community agroforestry plantations

The overall objective of the project is to support smallholder women farming groups to invest in sustainable land management using agroforestry technology as a livelihood option. The project will empower the individual farmers to invest integrated climate smart cashew and livestock farming which is expected to increase the income of women groups whiles increasing the areas under sustainable land managements in the landscape.
The main project objective is to promote sustainable land management and livelihood of smallholder women farmers through agroforestry and climate smart agriculture.

Specific Project Objectives
a) To support small holder farmers to invest in climate smart integrated cashew plantation in two project communities intercropped with groundnut, and cowpeas.
b) To support the women?s groups to integrate apiaries and small ruminant rearing in the cashew plantations and community reserved forests.
c) To train and empower the smallholder farmers into Village Saving And Loan Associations (VSLAs) in order to increase access and control over resources and use collective power to overcome social and financial barriers.

Expected Project Results/Output
Output 1: 15 ha of climate smart integrated cashew plantations established in two communities intercropped with groundnut and cowpea.
Output 2: Six (6) women?s groups assisted to establish apiaries in two communities.
Output 3: Six (6) VSLAs groups formed by the smallholder farmers in the two communities and made functional.

The indigenous people would be involved in training in climate smart agriculture technologies.

Notable Community Participation

The main beneficiaries of the project are the young women groups in the project communities. The reduction of inequalities and the inclusion of traditionally marginalized groups such as indigenous peoples, youths, and persons with disabilities is achieved by ensuring marginalized and vulnerable groups are involved in all group and community engagement activities and their concerns heard and where possible addressed and ensure they are well represented. Additionally, inclusive membership, leadership opportunities, knowledge sharing, and access to resources for marginalized and vulnerable groups will be encouraged. This help to promote social inclusion and improved the livelihoods of traditionally marginalized groups.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The project will use case studies, field visits and short write up to disseminate information of the project.

Capacity - Building Component

The women lack capacities in climate smart agriculture technologies.

Gender Focus

The women will implement the project. The men will provide technical and manual support

Project Results

The project is aimed at restoring degraded farmlands for agricultural purposes through agroforestry plantations and livelihood empowerment in Dakompilayiri and Kunkuya in the Sawla Tuna Kalba district.
The project kick started with community awareness creation, profiled over 127 women 46 being widows and 39 men 30 youth in Dakompilayiri and Kunkuya.
The project was launched at Dakompilayiyiri. The Sawla District Assembly MoFA and opinion leaders from Tuna were in attendance.
? The project has assisted two local communities to establish 15 ha of climate-smart integrated cashew agroforestry plantations intercropped with groundnut and cowpea.
? 40 women and 20 men were supplied cashew seedlings, groundnuts, and cowpea seedlings for cultivation.
? 60 smallholder farmers 40 women and 20 men were supported to establish alternative livelihood enterprises domestic animals, birds, and purchasing of shea nuts.
? Establishment of 60 apiaries in community farms, dam catchment areas, and forests.
? Trained 120 farmers in good agronomical practices using the Farmer field school approach.
? Established 2 new VSLAs for 2 widow?s groups. 46 in Dakompilayiri and 14 from Kunkuya.
? Trained farmers in beekeeping and production.
