Building the capacity and resilience of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in integrated vegetable and aquaponic farming for climate adaptation.
This project seeks to empower Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) with the Banda District through sustainable agriculture and fishery. With the advent of climate change, loss of soil fertility and bad farming practices, agricultural yields have dwindled over the past years resulting in food insecurity. Poverty and hunger among vulnerable groups in the society, particularly PWDs, are phenomenal. The focus of the project is to undertake building the capacities of the PWDs in the cultivation of organic vegetables like green pepper, red pepper, cabbage, cucumber, carrots, onions, under simple irrigation using aquaponic.
The project seeks to achieve the following objectives:
? To build the capacities of the PWDs in climate smart agriculture and agroforestry.
? To support the PWDs to invest in integrated organic farming, which combine small ruminant rearing, poultry, and fish farming .
? To engage the PWDs in digital village savings.
EXPECTED PROJECT OUTPUT
This project is expected to yield three outputs as follows:
a) 120 PWDs within the Banda District trained in climate smart agriculture under small scheme irrigation.
b) Two (2) PWD groups invest in aquaponic and integrated climate smart agriculture and animal husbandry.
c) 240 PWDs engaged in digital village savings.
PROJECT OUTPUT INDICATORS
The following indicators will be used to assess project output.
? 10 sensitization programs organized for stakeholders and community members.
? 650 stakeholders and community members sensitized about the project.
? 10 sensitization programs organized for PWDs.
? 240 PWDs sensitized about the project.
? 100 PWDs trained in climate smart agriculture segregated by sex and age.
? Two groups of PWDs engaged in sustainable agriculture segregated.
? Documents on land agreement
EXPECTED PROJECT OUTCOME
The following outcome is anticipated.
? Reduced poverty among beneficiary PWDs

? 100 PWDs off the street
? 200 of PWDs who are fending for themselves and have a voice in their households.
