Tree Nursery as part of nature trail project
The proposed project is to expand our existing nature trail project at the Lyford Cay International School (LCIS) upper campus by replacing invasive alien species of trees in our forest with native species, and planting areas of our new campus with native species of trees and plants. To do so we propose to build a tree nursery where we will germinate and grow native trees.
This will also allow us to provide other schools with native tree seedlings in the longer run, and provide a valuable learning space for students and visitors to learn about the importance of biodiversity and preserving forests. The project will also include finishing the existing trails (tree signage, levelling paths, etc.) and excavating an ephemeral pond to encourage the animals and insects that drink, hunt and breed there. We hope that this project will instill a greater appreciation and respect for the environment in our students and community members who will be able to use the space.
We are also looking to meet the the requirements of the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) to achieve the Certified Wildlife Habitat® certification for our trail. We hope that this project
will inspire other schools to do the same, and we commit to support them in their efforts with our expertise and seedlings.
