Bikenibeu Kiribati Uniting Church (KUC) Taubukin Tion Renewable energy project
Bikenibeu Kiribati Uniting Church (KUC) Taubukin Tion Renewable energy project
Taubukin Tion (TBT), KUC Bikenibeu is main center of the Bikenibeu Uniting Church community. The community has never been immune and surviving to many exposures to multiple effects of climate fluctuations such as seawater inundation, costal erosion, and surges of the king waves. The proposed Project will install a solar photovoltaic and battery energy storage system to enable the Church to support the government to achieve its renewable energy target for South Tarawa, reduce consumption of diesel fuel for power generation, and help mitigate climate change by cutting greenhouse gas emissions through clean renewable energy. The project will ultimately reduce the Church?s reliance on Public Utilities Board (PUB)?s diesel generators and mitigate the problems with power outage especially during the nights when KUC Bikenibeu hosts big Church gatherings.

To address severe vulnerability to climate change impacts and extreme weather events, the Bikenibeu KUC is keen to be part of the national zero carbon emission target for the next 25 years. The project will also incorporate climate-resilient designs to address exposure to high sea spray levels, rising temperatures and reduced rainfall, storm surges and other.

The project is aligned with the government?s Kiribati Vision 20-Years (KV20) and the Kiribati Integrated Energy Roadmap 2016-2025 (KIER) and also contributes to the Kiribati Intended nationally Determined Contribution (INDC).
