Building Community Capacity to Adapt to Cimate Change at Phonsavang village, Meung district, Borkeo province.
Phonsavang village, Meung district, Borkeo province is a poor and indigenous village. There are 94 households with a total population of 530, include 253 females. The people here are Akha tribe, which is a small ethnic group. The main sources of income are farming (25 hectares of rice fields of the village), hunting, and reliance on natural resources for basic needs. Phonsavang village have been practiced swidden agriculture for generations, but lack of knowledge on cultivates in climate-resilient manner, the hamlet is extremely vulnerable to climate change. Large tracts of woodland have been removed for plantings of rice and other crops. In addition, year 2022, there was flash flood that damaged the irrigation as resulting one third of the village cannot secure the food, especially rice throughout the year. The project aims to build community capacity to adapt to climate change as mainly flood and drought disasters through irrigation construction, forest protection and promote in doing two seasons of rice paddy farming and offering other short training courses in agricultural fields for more rice productive.
