Community based integrated approach to facilitate Human elephant Coexistence and biodiversity conservation in Udalguri, Assam
Biodiversity loss and land degradation threaten both wildlife and society. The communities of the proposed site struggle to reconcile to the situation of HEC arising from this situation which impacting their life and livelihood. In this context, the proposed project aims to develop an integrated model which can benefit both humans and elephants through introducing nature-based solution involving community. The project will restore 20 ha land, benefits over 800 beneficiaries (about 50% of women), established community-managed nurseries involving local women, document homestead garden biodiversity and associated practices of the project site. In addition, at least 40 ha land will be under improved practices by this project. Most importantly, the proposed activity model can be scaled up in future for the well-being of society and biodiversity conservation. The project will also give special focus on sensitizing and building capacities to individuals from different age groups. 5 NGOs, 3 BMCs and local youth & women will be trained and handhold to achieve set proposed objective. This project will involve stakeholders from the community and line department for convergence. The proposed project will contribute to GEF Core indicator 3, 4 and 11.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms
? Key observation, learning, good practices as well as challenges will be documented. ? Case study on good practices will be developed. ? Database of homestead biodiversity will be developed. ? Document on homestead biodiversity and traditional practices will be produced.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Aaranyak have active presence in the area, communication won?t be a major challenge. Aaranyak will inform and involve all the key village institution leaders, take care of representation of men, women and youth and will be made aware about ?what, why and how? of the proposed project activities from the beginning of the project. Community will participate from the decision-making process to evaluation and monitoring phases of the project. They will supervise activities like species selection, operation, periodic monitoring and evaluation. A group of youth members will be trained and assigned with documentation of homestead gardens and they will be facilitated and handhold by the project team. Outreach activities will be arranged to develop deeper understanding on BD, CCM, LD.
