Integrated Development of Farming Communities with Climate Proofing Interventions
Integrated Development of Farming Communities with Climate Proofing Interventions
Drought is one of the recurring features of Indian agriculture, especially in the rain-fed areas. It affects not only national food security but also causes miseries to human life and livestock. The study area, i.e., Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu, India (Latitude 9°40?and Longitude 78°70?) has been affected consecutively for the last decade by drought due to the failure of rainfall of northeast and southwest monsoons. So, the economic status of the area has declined due to the drought and the people from this district have migrated to other districts to improve their socio-economic status. This district has seven taluks, eleven blocks and four hundred and twelve village panchayats. In order to develop the degraded land and promote the agriculture activities and mitigate drought due to climate change, the following steps are to be undertaken by this project is to
1. Provide the technology to retain the water in the soil for longer period and provide the technology to drain the excess water in to the water-storing structures for future usage
2. Educate the farmers to cultivate cash crops on the basis of soil, water and native environmental situation and climate change situation etc.
3. Adopt the village to the level of sustainable of farmers in the sector of climate change adaptation on Agriculture, Agriculture allied activities, improve the livelihood of village artisans and financial status of individual.
4. Augmentation of engineering structures in the coastal area will prevent sea water intrusion in the shallow aquifer.
5. To improve the socio-economic status, insist the farmer to take the crop insurance scheme.
6. The study area is located nearer to the sea, so the large scale desalination plant system should be implemented by government organisation to get fresh water for improving agriculture practices.
