Reef for fish for Ever Fabrication and Deployment of Artificial Reef to enhance the marine fisheries resources and conserve the coastal biodiversity at Rameshwaram fishing villages in Ramanathapuram District.

The Gulf of Mannar region in Ramnad district is enriched with productive habitats such as coral reefs, seagrasses, mangroves, estuaries, rocky shores and sandy beaches. The Gulf of Mannar has drawn attention of conservationists even before the initiation of the Man and Biosphere (MAB) program by the UNESCO in 1971. Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

In the present scenario due to the advance development Information and communication Technology, any communications can be send in a swift mode. Moreover, it studied that each and every beneficiary are the user of android mobile phone in which the communication can be shared through email/Whatapps and other software application. In the meantime the preparation and distribution of IEC material will be distributed to raise awareness. Other than this the folk and art media and street theatre community radio are the method of communication to create awareness and also the early warning systems can be disseminated through digital display and through loud speakers.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Knowledge management system adopted hrough the process of documentation of traditional knowledge and associated knowledge to create a community knowledge registrar with the support of Nation Biodiversity Authority of India. The People Biodiversity Register can be used as a tool to document the biodiversity of the project area. All these knowledge will be available in a common platform to access the information by the beneficiary group at all the time. The collection of information and knowledge will be systematically documented and then make e-publication and periodical and journals etc. it is also possible to develop website to disseminate information and YouTube channels and social media.

Notable Community Participation

This project will not bring gender disparities among fisher folk. During the implementation of the project the men and women, indigenous people and youth and disability groups of people equally participated in the execution of the project. The women were involved in the fabrication of artificial reefs along with the men so that they get income for rendering their labour. Moreover, once the fish catch operation starts men's role is only to catch fish but marketing the fish is taken care of by the women. The women are also a member of the Artificial Reef management committee to take an important decision in controlling the overexploitation of fisheries resources and collecting 10 per cent of the money from the beneficiaries to save as a village common fund. this fund may be utilized for the maintenance of the reef zone and use this money as a revolving fund to take care of their family need, child education, marriage and hospital expenses

The reef will be deployed in three clusters/zones for all these proposed villages.
? to fabricate and deploy 300 artificial reefs at the off coast of Mangadu, Sambai, Vadakadu, Olaikuda, Irakadu, Gudiiruppu, Pudurodu, Natarasapuram, Serankootai, Karaiyur, Ramakrishnapuram,Pamban Therkuvadi and chiinapalam at Rameshwaram, Ramnad District, Tamilnadu, India to enhance the marine fishery resources and to conserve coastal bio-diversity
