Convert Domestic Waste to Compost in Massawa
Convert Domestic Waste to Compost in Massawa
The project being proposed is named as ?Community Capacity Building for Sound Waste Management.?
As its name indicates the project will have the following facets:
? That Main activity that is supposed to be done in this project is Capacity building and awareness raising on the target group using different appropriate ways.
? The Location for the implementation of this project is on the City of Massawa, Northern Red Sea Region.
? The Target communities that will be beneficiaries of this project are the residents and other relevant stakeholders of the Massawa City Administration.
? The Key environmental issue to be dealt by this project is enhance sustainable waste management through composting of the biodegradable waste as well as introducing recycling/reusing of the non-biodegradable wastes as appropriate

The Proposed approaches for this project are nine in number and namely:
1. Procurement and dissemination of waste collection bins with different colors to be used for waste segregation.
2. Preparation and publication of a teaching material and guidelines for trainings and awareness raising programs.
3. Conducting Assessment Study on the current status of the waste management cycle in Massawa City.
4. Trainings of Trainers (ToT) and monitors of the project.
5. Carry out inception and evaluation workshops.
6. Devising and implementing an exit strategy that would make the impact of the project as lasting as possible and/or assure sustainability.
In addition to these approaches, other means will be considered as appropriate

The main justification of the project is the fact that the existing waste management in Massawa city is weak and not satisfactory. One of the major causes for that is the limited capacity and awareness on the public and other key actors in the waste management. Workers in the sanitary unit of the Massawa city can be taken as an example. They expose themselves to the hazardous waste without wearing the necessary personal protective equipment (PPEs). They don?t even use equipment which is of minimum requirement for keeping themselves safe from contacting to hazardous emissions and releases that emanate from wastes. Besides, people collect, transport and dispose waste without segregation, and this is not suitable to reuse and recycle wastes. Moreover, generated at households, institutions, commercial and other sectors is dumped out of the designated places and sites. To mention some of the places; open places, seashore ?. Etc. As a result of this poor waste management, environmental deterioration is eminent and no economic benefits will be gained.. Therefore, fostering of training and awareness raising focusing on the target groups is one of the core options to bring a fast and practical solution on the indicated community of the city and this will be replicated to the overall waste management system of Sub Zoba Massawa as well as other towns of Northern Red Sea Region.
