Reducing deforestation through Access to improved traditional energy saving stoves In
Fishey- Mrara Villages
Reducing deforestation through access to energy saving stove in Fishey-Mrara village involves installation of energy saving stove in the village which aims to reduce daily use of firewood in the households. The village is located in the northern part of the Ghindae sub zone area which is known for its local name Green Belt. The project would give prior in capacitating women of the village in construction and sustainable use of the energy saving stove in their daily life. By the end of the project implementation smoke born health issues would reduce, energy loss for collecting firewood would be reduced, biomass of the village surrounding area would be enhanced.
Fishey and Mrara are two villages of Ghindae sub zone located about 100 km northwest of the town Ghindae. These two villages are governed by one administration and have around 600 households.
Inhabitants are highly dependent on fire wood and rain fed agriculture for their daily life. Dependence on fire wood as energy source would exert significant pressure on ecosystem resources especially flora.
Since it falls in the most north part of the green belt, the area is included in the national protected area which brought restrictions in firewood collection to household from nearby areas. This situation creates significant impact on women who has the responsibility of managing family as to the day to day activity. Not only the high consumption of fire wood which results high deforestation, the smoke from the open use of fire wood is causing high health effects.
So introduction and enhancement of energy saving stove would reduce the conflict of interest between daily needs of energy and rehabilitation of ecosystem regeneration, and enhance the health of the community specially woman.
The direct beneficiaries from the two villages will be 351 households and get benefited from the project.
