d) Describe previous experience relevant to the proposed project, including activities related to global environmental issues; or experience with projects that focus on sustainable development at community level. (Max 600 words)
GGZT has implemented four ( 4) projects that are aimed at addressing global environmental issues in the last four years. The organization possesses experience in climate change awareness at local and national level. It has developed climate change media engagement methods that are designed to those communities and stakeholder within the cross-section have a contextual understanding of climate change and are playing a part on climate change mitigation and adaption. . GGZT has also assisted communities to improve their adaptive capacity to climate change by training them and supporting them to pursue alternative economic activities. The organization has trained communities on agroecology, smart agriculture and clean energy alternatives. It has also influenced local and national level climate policy formulation processes. Through Strategic Partnership Agreement 2 Project (SPA 2) funded by Action Aid Zimbabwe, which GGZT is currently implementing in ward 22 and 23 in Chimanimani district, the organization has managed to capacitate more than 300 young Climate Action Teams (CAT) that developed a climate action plan that was adopted by the Chimanimani Rural District Council. GGZT also influenced the development of the Chimanimani climate change and watershed policy and contributed to the drafting of Zimbabwe National Determined Contributions (NDCs). In ward 14 and 15 Chimanimani district GGZT is also implementing the Community Environmental Peace Project (CEPP) that is amplifying mechanism that promote peace and environmental protection , working closely with EMA and Forestry Commission. In implementing the project GGZT is working with more than 300 women and 200 men to promote environmental protection and revegetating the areas that were destroyed by cyclone Idai through afforestation. Through the project GGZT has managed to plant more than 1000 indigenous trees in both wards. GGZT currently support Disaster Risk Reduction Committees in Chimanimani through training, capacity building and development of DRR tools. It conducts research to inform local and national level climate policy as exemplified by the research on Disaster Risk Management Act. The project was also pushing for the review and introduction of environmental by-laws in Chimanimani that ensures the protection of vegetation. The project is centered around the theme ?Peace and harmony with Nature?.
Green Governance Zimbabwe Trust is also implementing a Climate change consultation legislative theatre project in ward 22 Chimanimani district. GGZT is working with more than 200 young people. The project gives young people a platform to influence policy around climate change issues through dramatizing climate change realities that they are facing. In most cases young people do not have the platform to interact with policy makers at National and local level but through art a message around their plight to climate change can be heard. GGZT created this interesting way of packaging information and capturing the voices of young people as councilors and Members of Parliament are given an opportunity to interact with the play or drama and have an appreciation of the voice of the youth around such pertinent issues. This was also an innovative and interesting way of capturing the interest of young people especially young women around participating in climate change matters. Chimanimani as a climate disaster prone district it is prudent to have adaptive and mitigation mechanisms that are supported by legislation. Through the project GGZT is also training young people on Disaster Risk Reduction mechanisms and also the adoption of Disaster risk reduction framework that is tailor made for Chimanimani district. Through this initiative the Chimanimani Rural District Council has given an opportunity. With the support of Oxfam, GGZT is implementing a Climate Media Collaboration (CMC) project in partnership with Magamba Network Zimbabwe. The project is building a nationwide movement that speaks on lived realities of communities that are affected by climate change and Chimanimani is one of those communities. The project has produced a number of documentaries on the plight of communities that are more vulnerable to climate risk. The researches that the project has produced are used to influence climate policies that include the financing of adaptation mechanism.

PART 2: PROJECT PROPOSAL
SECTION A: PROJECT FRAMEWORK
1. Project Summary
The Renewable Energy and Local Economic Development Project (RELED) will be implemented under Mukondomi ward 21, in Chimanimani District. It seeks to promote access to clean energy to increase economic alternatives for young people in Chimanimani District while addressing the impacts of deforestation. The district falls under agro-ecological region 4 and 5 and is comprised of high temperature, high humidity and average rainfall of 140mm. It is generally humid and is a perfect environment for horticultural products and fruit production. Its geographical location makes it a reliable source for horticultural products and fruits for areas such as Masvingo, Mutare, Bulawayo and Harare. Chimanimani?s climate and abundant water sources heavily supports the district?s expansive bio-diversity and plant species; and diverse agricultural produce produced in the region. For the households in Mukondomi (ward 21), production and trading of horticultural product such as (beans, maize, mushroom, potato) and fruits (bananas, pineapples) and non-timber forest products (mawuyu, reeds etc) are their main source of livelihoods. They sell at their homes, at Jopa growth point and to intercity travelers, and manage to pay school fees, health bills, and provide their families with food and clothes. GGZT intends to enrich the learning fabric for young people in Chimanimani in order for them to leverage on the economic opportunities that arise from harnessing and utilizing clean energy within their agro-based activities. GGZT intends to set up a solar-powered entrepreneurship centre (Eco-Energy Centre) in Chimanimani ward 21, which will support 204 youths with agro-production, processing, packaging and marketing activities. The centre will be a demonstration centre that showcase the increasing economic viability of harnessing clean energy in agro-based activities. In that regard it will be composed of a 1-hectare horticulture plot, processing centre for agro-products and digital marketing centre. The centre will to promote access to clean energy to increase economic alternatives for young people in Chimanimani District while addressing the impacts of deforestation. The $50 000.00 grant being requested from GEFSGP is meant to assist the Mukondomi community to achieve the following:
Objectives
Primary objective
The Renewable Energy and Local Economic Development Project (RELED) seeks to promote access to clean energy in order to improve economic alternatives for young people in Chimanimani District.
Project objectives
a. To increase access to clean energy by establishing a solar powered entrepreneurship centre within the first 6 months benefitting 150 young entrepreneurs
b. To promote diversified and improved economic alternatives from the use of renewable energy and foster entrepreneurships skills such as hairdressing, Barber and value addition in the next 2 years
c. Promote sustainable environmental protection through agroecology and agroforestry to increase carbon sinks, reducing deforestation by 70% in ward 21 of Chimanimani district by December 2024
2. Project Justification and Baseline
Problem Analysis:
Lack The lack of access to clean energy for young people in Chimanimani hampers their real potential to improve their farming enterprises; affects consistent supply of water and limits access to knowledge on harnessing clean energy for economic development. The electricity penetration within Chimanimani District is confined to growth points, leaving out the rest of the community without reliable energy. In this regard, young people are left with limited economic alternatives as most of the entrepreneurship skills particularly in farming currently require reliable power supply such as solar energy. Young farmers are failing to get the full benefits of their farming exploits as their prospects are disrupted by lack of energy or are not able to do value addition of their agro-products due to lack of energy. In most cases, young farmers make loses as their produce gets because of a lack of a reliable market and also lack of capacity to store or value add their products.
The failure to make the farming industry lucrative for young farmers leads them to venture into brick moulding and charcoal production as a source of livelihood. Brick moulding and charcoal making are major contributors to deforestation in Chimanimani district. According to the Environmental Management Agency, youths are prepared to pay the penalty for engaging in deforestation to supply their brick molding activities than to close business. Young people lack knowledge on the heavy impacts on the environment and climate. Yearly, the number of young people that join the brick moulding industry increases as they are no other available livelihood opportunities. Chimanimani is not only losing its indigenous forestry to such activities but according to Forestry Commission, the district lost more than 30hectares of land to veldfires. In 2021 GGZT conducted a joint campaign with EMA and Forestry Commission in Chimanimani to raise awareness on the negative impacts of veld fires.
Further, Ward 21 in Chimanimani is facing energy poverty, leading to environmental degradation as a result of massive deforestation from firewood. Without adequate education and awareness on sustainable alternative energy sources, the rate at which the district is losing its forests may not be curtailed. More than 600 families in this ward heavily depend on paraffin for lighting and firewood for cooking. This is happening on top of the blow rendered by 2019 Cyclone Idai which did its share in destroying hectares and hectares of land and vegetation. This increases the communities vulnerability to tropical storms and flashfloods since the District is now prone to climate change related disasters.
Proposed intervention
a. To increase access to clean energy by establishing a solar powered entrepreneurship centre within the first 6 months benefitting 150 young entrepreneurs
GGZT proposes to construct an off-grid solar powered entrepreneurship centre. The centre will be fitted with eight 375W Canadian solar panels, 5kva solar inverter and three 48V/100AH lithium batteries. It will have 24/7 energy access where have an internet lab, a research centre, an agro-processing shed and a 10l reservoir tank. The centre will serve as a training center on clean energy alternatives, value-adding and agro-ecology. Peer learning on environmental rehabilitation will also be conducted at the centre. Activities on research and learning centre will also be established where farmers will have access to internet lab.
b. To promote diversified and improved economic alternatives from the use of renewable energy and foster entrepreneurships skills in the next 2 years
The centre will support young people with clean energy to do their value addition activities such as solar drying, making peanut butter and banana chips.
Young people will also use the 1-hectare plot at the centre to do nutrition gardens and grow crops such as mushrooms and vegetables. The centre will also open opportunities for alternative skills such as dress-making and barbershop.
c. Promote sustainable environmental protection through agro-ecology and agroforestry to increase carbon sinks, reducing deforestation by 70% in ward 21 of Chimanimani district by December 2024
GGZT will set-up a 2mx2m nursery where indigenous trees will be nurtured. The nursery will be the community?s source of trees which they will be encouraged to plant within their gardens and households. 2000 indigenous trees are anticipated to be planted during the course of the project. Training will also be conducted at the centre on Forest Protection and rehabilitation and saw-dust charcoal production as an major alternative source of fuel for cooking.
Direct Causes Indirect Causes
1. Limited access to clean energy
2.Limited knowledge on harnessing clean energy
3. Lack of access to clean energy technologies
4. Lack of financial resources to invest in renewable energy technology
5. Information gap on alternative sources of livelihood and economic empowerment skills
1.Communities have no knowledge of human action contribution to climate change
2.Lack of knowledge and information on environmental protection policies.
3. Unequal balance between population size and available resources.
4. Poverty and limited livelihood opportunities
