PART 2: PROJECT PROPOSAL
SECTION A: PROJECT FRAMEWORK
1. Project Summary (Max 600 words)
The project is overall goal is addressing land degradation through gully reclamation, agro forestry and organic farming for sustainable livelihoods This proposed project resonates well with GEF country strategy and thematic area of land degradation and sustainable forestry management. The project is being implemented in ward 5 which is approximately above 6000 people for villages namely Nenohwe, Nemaramba, Chibuweand Nemutenzi village with a target of 290 direct beneficiaries for the three programs under the project. These include:
i) nurseries and value addition
ii) ii) gully reclamation
iii) iii) organic conservation farming.
The region falls under Chimanimani district which of late has been experiencing not only environmental land pollution but has been battling with climate change due to inconsistence of weather patterns resulting in increased poverty gap between women and men. The climate siege has impacted access to clean water and has lowered productivity in agriculture and livelihood projects such fisheries. Henceforth, the objective of this project is to promote environmental restoration of degraded land through natural agroforestry practices and upholding conservation farming for improved production and productivity to livelihood enhancement The project also focuses mostly on social inclusion of vulnerable groups of women, PWD and youths constituting more than 60 percent of ward 5 beneficiaries to the project. To add on, the project seeks to address and mitigate environmental problems affecting the well-being of the communities? women, children, men and people living with disabilities.
The project henceforth seeks
i) to enhance and promote the knowledge skills of the community to utilize and manage natural resources and practice sustainable land management through gully reclamation and tree planting
ii) Strengthen the capacity for local rural communities to practice organic farming for small grain production and horticulture to enhance livelihood resilience and biodiversity conservation.
The project expected results are to have a strengthened community with young people and women who are determined in pushing for nature based actions in addressing land degradation and at the same time improving income generating opportunities. The project outcome goal is to have increased knowledge capacity for the community to improve sustainable environmental protection and food security. To add on, it also seeks to bring awareness to the benefits the community will get from the conservation of their indigenous fruit trees by value addition and embracing organic farming which cheap and effective to soil conservation. The Community is going to benefit vast knowledge on harvesting, marketing and value addition of garden produce and natural products.

Problem/Issue
Challenge The project is of great importance as it seeks to address environmental problems affecting the well-being of the communities? that include women, children, men and people living with disabilities. The need to overcome environmental problems is not only for the community members but it ensures young children are given a safe and clean environment to freely exercise their right to play without falling into open pits. Notably the major environment problem facing the district area is land degradation mainly caused by a number of complex human and natural activities that include mining activities, overgrazing, soil type, poor method of farming, deforestation. This has resulted to development of numerous gullies which has directly and indirectly reduced agricultural land to farm and build infrastructure. The Ward 5 covers the four villages Nemaramba, Chibuwe, Nenohwe, Nemutenzi a survey has recorded of 45-65 critical gullies of different sizes in length, width and deep which shows a critical need to be reclaimed to promote and protect the environment and people needs?? of the baseline survey is attached to the proposal. To add on, the project seeks to work with EMA in raising awareness on alternative source of energy to reduce deforestation so to enhance efforts of replantation/afforestation. The area has a large number of people who still really on collection of wood for firewood and cutting of trees for construction purposes without replantation. The project seeks to protect and improve the climate alternative of sources through awareness and nurseries education. The gullies are at various stages of formation with most being massive and almost uncontrollable however the project has sustainable solutions if implemented.
The degraded land has proliferated water borne diseases as most gullies store water during and after rainy season indirectly affecting the heath standard of the community. The implementation of the project protect school children considering there are 3 primaries and one secondary?s within the area highlighted to have high records of open pits henceforth activating the project enhance the protection of children rights to a safe environment. The project will be appreciated by the schools as they have been highlighting the same problem with Practical Action tthrough tree planting initiatives but have been lacking capacity to construct sustainable solutions like gabions construction and gulley reclamation. .
Furthermore, Chimanimani is not spared from climate change as it is now facing shortened rainfall seasons which has negatively impacted on agriculture and livestock production in the area. This has resulted in poverty, migration to look for better opportunities, malnutrition in some cases and early marriages (some instance forced marriages) to alternatively reduce household poverty by sending children to marry well up families. The area has youth and children who resort to artisanal mining as a way to survive due to lack of formalized employment henceforth the project will create employment opportunities at the same time giving women, youth and PWD access to land, water and productive means for survival. The communities and farmers in Ward 4 have been facing water shortage for both human consumption and livestock production. The area depends on few boreholes which are still functional and Odzi River which is pegged a distance from the village ward. The introduction of organic farming, small grain production and horticulture will improve resilience to livelihood production and promote climate adaptation to the community.
? How the project relates and will be contributing to the SGP Country Programme Strategy
? How the project relates to other relevant programmes supported by government, GEF and other donors, and private sector. (Max 400 words)
The project links very well with other GEF larger projects which address most Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The project links with (SDG goal 1) that seeks to eradicate extreme poverty. To add on climate action and protection of the environment SDG Goal 11 which ensures environmental sustainability which seeks to integrate sustainable development principles into national policies. Furthermore, the project Woman-be contributing to the SGP Country Programme Strategy through promoting public awareness of Global Environment issues and ensuring it implements community solutions on how to mitigate and adapt to land degradation and climate change effects. The project contributes to the programme goal and objective of achieving of mitigating land degradation to increase access to land for better improved conservation farming. The project besides the elements of community capacity building, it shall demonstrate and train plot groups of farmers in conservation farming. This will enable the respective households to improve their crop yields, which will contribute towards household food security for the community. To add on, the project is closely linked to EMA as section 87-96 which provides for the preparation of a national environmental action plan to include issues of prevention and mitigation of activities contributing to global climate change. On gender and inclusivity, the project ensures both men, PWD, youth and women are actively involved in the project activities and trainings so as to equally empower them to manage the resources effectively.
