Projeto Sementes da Fartura - Patrimônio Genético dos Povos do Semiárido Piauiense.

The Sementes da Fartura Project ? Genetic Heritage of the Peoples of the Semiarid Region, aims to discuss with families and find a solution to the problem of genetic contamination of Crioula Seeds, which is leading to the loss of biodiversity, as well as the extreme dependence of farming families on genetically modified seeds, thus preserving this heritage of incalculable value for present and future generations, the food and nutritional sovereignty of the people who inhabit the communities of the municipalities of Pedro II, Milton Brandão and Juazeiro do Piauí, which make up the landscape of the Poti River. The Seeds of Plenty Project ? Genetic Heritage of the Peoples of the Semiarid Piauí, also brings as perspectives, the awareness of guardian families, for the feeling of belonging, and commitment to the ?Rescue, Multiplication and Preservation of Seeds of Plenty through Houses/Banks existing Community Seeds?, which were implemented by the ASA Semi-Arid Seeds Program ? Articulation in the Brazilian Semi-Arid, from 2015 to 2019. Access by families to genetically modified seeds, associated with climatic conditions, has led to low productivity, causing disincentive on the part of young people in the activity, and consequently the aging of family farming. Faced with these challenges, participatory action is necessary that involves the involvement of Children, Young People, Women, Men and the Elderly, who carry the Secrets of the Art of Good Living, at the source of popular wisdom.

Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Carrying out 100 Transgenic Tests, these activities allow families to know the genetic quality of the Seeds existing in the Community Seed Houses/Banks, as well as those that are under the care of the rest of the families in the communities belonging to the Alto Poti Basin Landscape , and surrounding regions. Knowing the quality of their seeds, it is up to families to carefully store all varieties that tested negative for transgenics, and those that tested positive, to be removed from the Seed Houses, as well as from family life. This way you will avoid contamination of those that are clean. To achieve this objective, it will be necessary to purchase 02 test kits.

Gender Focus

From the moment the project adopts in its execution the practice of involving women, men, young people, children and the elderly, in all stages, of the work carried out in the Seed Houses of the three municipalities that make up the landscape of the Basin do Alto Poti, through training in Community Management of Seed Diversity, Stock Management, Workshops to exchange experiences and knowledge, holding lectures in schools in the communities involved with the project in each municipality, holding the harvest festival, as a way to give visibility to the results achieved by the project at all stages, exchange visits, joint decision-making, are actions that will allow the Sementes guardian families to understand that for a group to achieve the dreamed success, the participation of everyone, not only when carrying out activities, but mainly when making decisions. The participation of the Collective is the Secret to reducing, and eliminating once and for all, gender inequalities in a community, in any social organization.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Implementation of Seed Multiplication Fields ? In each community where there are Seed Houses, in addition to the fields worked by each family, it is necessary to implement collective Seed Multiplication Fields, where tested and selected seed varieties will be planted, to compose the Houses' stock, as well as promote the generation of income through the sale of surplus; Participation of Guardian Families in Festivals and Seed Fairs ? These activities will be of great importance both in terms of the organizational process of groups of Guardians and Seed Guardians, as well as for the commercialization of Seeds, exchange of experiences , give visibility to action with seeds in the state and municipalities. This is what we can consider the highlight of the work.

Capacity - Building Component

Promotion of 02 Administrative and Financial Management Workshops for Seed custodian families, which aims to improve the organization in the management of Seed Houses; b)- Carry out 07 capacity building in Characterization and Community Management of Seed Diversity, so that families can learn about all the varieties of Seeds that are stored in the Seed House, as well as in the community and region, learn to define their characteristics, adapt to climatic conditions of each community, in addition to preparing to defend and prevent this heritage from being contaminated by transgenics; c)- Carry out 07 Stock Management Capacity Building in Community Seed Bank Houses: These training aims to establish strategies for the management of Community Seed Houses/Banks, such as, for example, criteria for distribution, loan, multiplication and return of seeds to be stored. It aims to define strategies for managing the gene pool available in the community as well as identifying the necessary structure for the proper functioning of the Seed Houses, as well as discussing techniques for the adequate storage of seeds. Instructors for both Training and Workshops enter the project as a Counterpart of CERAC;

Policy Impact

Strengthen the interaction of seed houses/banks in the Alto Poti landscape, through the Rede Sementes da Fartura and seed policies, with emphasis on access and the mechanism for purchasing and simultaneously donating seeds through the Food Acquisition Program in several of its modalities

Notable Community Participation

The project will work directly with members of the Crioula Seed Community Banks, which is a continuous, participatory action that will create Seed House groups of Junior Guardians and Young People, who will continue the projects developed by the men. , women and the elderly. This way, there will always be people available to continue the work with Sementes da Fartura/Sementes Crioulas in the communities belonging to the landscape of the upper Poti Basin. It is an alternative to not letting family farming grow old, in addition to creating a commitment to preserving Criollo Seeds, it will enable each community to generate income through the sale of quality Seeds for planting. Involving in the planning of actions with Sementes da Fartura not only the members of the groups, but giving opportunities to young people, women, children and especially the elderly, holders of great popular knowledge, will enrich the learning of everyone who takes part of the process.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

To disseminate the experiences of the project, in addition to exchange visits to exchange experiences, the systematization of successful experiences will be carried out in the Seed Houses through Booklets and Banners, and made known to the general public through radio programs carried out by partners, and in meetings held by the project during its execution.
