Disaster Waste Management Guide
Disaster Waste Management Guide
Our project aims to organize a meeting called " Serious environmental risks occur after disasters (fire, flood, earthquake, etc.). After flood disasters in cities, materials used due to flood waters in areas where human activity occurs (houses, workplaces, factories) turn into waste and create pollution, and waste in the infrastructure system (sewage, wastewater treatment facilities, etc.) reaches living spaces. It is also known that the waste in question contains "persistent organic pollutants" (POPs). For this reason, public health and other living creatures are exposed to pollution. After the flood, these wastes must be collected and disposed of by taking into account environmental conditions. Similarly, after the earthquake, wastes such as rubble, human and animal waste, electronic waste, iron, asbestos and POPs emerge, and their use and disposal under appropriate conditions must be ensured. Waste is also a problem in new temporary settlements established in conditions following earthquakes and floods. In case of fires, waste generation in urban areas and in nature must be managed correctly. Preparing plans before all these disasters occur, clarifying the duties of institutions and individuals, and the active participation of private companies involved in waste management in the process will reduce environmental risks. It was also seen in the last earthquake that no planning was made for the management of disaster waste in our country. In this context, it would be beneficial to prepare a guide document that can be used by relevant individuals and institutions, especially local administrations, and to have relevant stakeholders contribute to the preparation of this document, thus taking a step towards the socialization process of the issue.
With Turkey's Disaster Waste Management Guide Project; Establishing a strategy for the central and local government institutions/organizations that have authority and responsibility in waste management, private sector companies working in the field and non-governmental organizations to evaluate and dispose of the wastes resulting from disasters in the most accurate way, causing the least harm to the environment and creating added value to the economy. and with this strategy, it is aimed to systematically achieve Turkey's waste management targets and to raise awareness by preparing a guide for the implementation of the strategy to realize these targets. Participation will be ensured by including all individuals/institutions and organizations that are interested in the society in the relevant guide preparation processes, and awareness, rational behavioral integrity and socialization will contribute to everyone's responsible and conscious behavior.
