Fish Biodiversity Status And Physico-Chemical Parameters Of Pampana River
Fish Biodiversity Status And Physico-Chemical Parameters Of Pampana River
The primary objective of this study is to document all information about the physico-chemical parameters that would influence fish abundance and biodiversity and raise awareness of locals about the statuses of these fish species in Pampana River. Specific objectives include capacity building of field staff and young scientists, through training in skills for conducting water quality parameters, fish species collection and identification, use of field equipment and data collection; collect data on all possible water quality parameters from Pampana River conduct research on socio economic and livelihood activities of the Pampana River; recording of fish species composition within these water bodies and setting up a data base for fish species abundance in the Pampana river. Activities will include training of field staff in using key research instrument/tools/methods, and conducting community sensitization and education meetings/seminars. It is hoped that this work will serve as a base for an intended national fresh waters fisheries biodiversity research. For this research PGF-NNGO hopes to engage field staff, purchasing of materials/equipment, education and sensitization, data collection, and laboratory work/analysis.
In order to achieve the study goal the followings objectives, are to be worked upon as stated below:
1.Take inventory of fish species composition and assess their biodiversity status in the water body.
2.Examine the physico-chemical or water quality parameters of the study environment
3.Determine length-weight frequency of selected fish species for economic and conservation purposes.
4.Examine the livelihood of pattern of fisherfolks

Project Characteristics and Results
Gender Focus
In order to ensure gender mainstreaming, the project will involve women in both the training, field exercises and data analysis. Women will be involved in collecting fish and other aquatic resources using their local nets (Bembay) and traps because women are the predominant group of involved in fishing in most rural communities. The project and project coordinator will ensure that for every meeting the ratio of men to women is at least 60:40 and in every deliberation, women will be given priority.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
Indigenes and home base fisher folks usually have wealth of knowledge about their immediate surroundings that could be of importance to scientific research or surveys; it is, therefore, eminent that PGF-NNGO will tap into that knowledge and make the best use of them and also improve upon them through the provision of refined and structured ones for better understanding of the scientific knowledge. These traini9ngs shall be covered by print and electronic media. This firsthand information or data sharing process will raise awareness and or assure locals of their local knowledge about their water bodies and species richness.
