Catchment-based conservation of Lake Natron wetland: ensuring sustainable livelihoods to the local communities in Engaresero village
Context:
Lake Natron?s lesser flamingo are adapted to respond to changes in environmental conditions by moving between their sites regularly, thus they are dependent on such sites, which in East Africa are spread over four countries: Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and Ethiopia. Thus conservation strategies for their habitat need to take into consideration the entire sub regional population. Trans-boundary and catchment based as well as shared ecosystem services conservation are equally important given the ecological linkages between the lakes and their watersheds. However, human activities in the catchment areas disrupt the ecological integrity of the lakes and their suitability as flamingo?s habitats. Given this current status of lake Natron, the ministry of natural resources and tourism of Tanzania calls for urgent actions to better manage the lake and rescue its lesser flamingos, which are in the IUCN?s list of near threatened species. It is upon this background that DECO proposes to contribute towards improvement of the conservation of the lake, while ensuring that the local communities are not left behind in achieving sustainable conservation and development.
Project?s Primary Objective:
To contribute to national and international community efforts of conserving Lake Natron wetland and the fragile lesser flamingos, while ensuring sustainable livelihoods to the local communities in Engaresero village.
Project?s purpose:
Contribute towards improvement of the conservation of the lake, while ensuring that the local communities are not left behind in achieving sustainable conservation and development.
