Natural resource management for local economic development in community-based organization wildlife management area, Meatu District
The project area covers 76,226 ha. in seven villages within five wards of Meatu District in Simiyu Region. It is sandwiched between Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Maswa Game Reserve, both are in Serengeti Ecosystem. The project area is important for the Great Serengeti Wildebeest Migration.
Expected Impact:
Sustainable and inclusive wildlife management that contributes to impoved wildlife conservation, local economic development, poverty reduction and improvement of inclusive governance and community livelihoods.
JUHIWAPOMA manages Makao WMA comprising 768.9 Km2 contributed by seven villages in Meatu district, Simiyu region. It was registered as Authorised Association (AA ) by the Wildlife Division in 2012 in accordance with WMA Regulation of 1989 (revised 2012) and was among 17 pilot WMAs. Makao WMA is mostly surrounded by two Protected Areas (PA) Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA) to the east and Maswa Game Reserve (MGR) to the West. The south east borders Lake Eyasi largely occupied by the hunter-gatherer Hadzabe and Datooga pastoral people. The agro-pastoral Sukuma community occupy most of the area surrounding the WMA. It has an area of 788 Km2 comprised of seven villages and recently established three villages annexed from among of the seven villages and introduced a new dimension which is not provided in the WMA regulations for subdividing a member WMA village. The name JUHIWAPOMA is an acronym for Jumuiya ya Hifadhi ya Wanyamapori Makao commonly referred as Makao WMA. The WMA is divided in four resource management zones which are : Tourist hunting zone (454 Km2), Emergence grazing zone (180 Km2), Resident hunting zone (137.5 Km2) and Mining Zone (16 Km2)
The project seeks to ameliorate the above challenges by the CBO undertaking participatory resurveying village land boundaries to identify degraded areas which may no longer be ecologically viable for wildlife habitats. The outcome of resurveyed boundaries are likely to influence and dictate resurveying the WMA and change its resource management zones and consequently seek resurveying WMA boundary and reviewing the WMA Resource Zone Management Plan (RZMP).
Based on the above statement , the project goal will be to Improve wildlife management in JUHIWAPOMA WMA for the benefit of conservation and local-economic development. The purpose will to reduce land use pressure in the WMA and improve wildlife management for local Economic development in JUHIWAPOMA WMA villages
