Zero-waste community construction project in Pazhuoba, Ganning Village, Haxiu Township, Yushu City, Qinghai Province, China
Description:
Ganning village is located in a remote area and was connected to electricity until 2022, and the majority of living materials are purchased from the outside world, many of which are non-biodegradable plastics and other products. According to the association's previous community work, most herders in the local community have the habit of using non-biodegradable materials and lack awareness of the dangers of rubbish, with each village generating around 15 tonnes of rubbish. There is currently no local rubbish collection site, and the nearest one is in Yushu City, 100 kilometres away. The people don't know the harm of white waste, so the association has started from the concept of awareness through publicity and education to make the people aware of the harm of rubbish.
Main Problems:
1. Inadequate local infrastructure for rubbish collection and disposal.
2. Local herders have insufficient knowledge of rubbish and environmental awareness.
3. There is a lack of local examples of real impact and modelling on littering.
Solutions:
1. Reduce Garbage: The association plans to invite outside experts in the field of rubbish, led by AngJiang, a respected local environmental leader, to conduct a series of publicity and education campaigns on the dangers of rubbish in Ganning Village and its neighbouring areas of Yunta Village, Along Village, Gangjang Village, and Haxiu Township (a total of 12 production teams).
2. Recycle recycling: The association will cooperate with the Yushu Forestry and Grassland Bureau and other government departments, assisted by SGR, which is familiar with the local situation, to popularise the knowledge of waste classification adapted to the local situation among the herders, and to choose a demonstration site around the village committee's centralised house as a waste classification and recycling station.
3. Reuse Garbage: The association will make good use of Pazhuopa's experience of working with outside designers to develop zero-waste art products. This will reduce waste pollution, change the community's understanding of waste and empower the disadvantaged groups in the community, achieve multi-party co-operation and exchange, create a typical case of community building and knowledge co-production, and promote the sharing of zero-waste experience in the entire Sanjiangyuan area.
Anticipated results/outcomes:
1. 80 percent of the herders in Ganning village and the surrounding area have learned about the hazards of rubbish, and there has been a marked improvement in their environmental awareness, so that they no longer throw any rubbish onto the grassland at random, the hazards caused by rubbish to the pasture/water/wildlife, etc., have been directly reduced, and the amount of rubbish that enters the rubbish recycling station has been reduced.
2. The rubbish collected and sorted by the herdsmen of Ganning Village was turned into household goods and environmental art installations with the assistance of outside designers, while women and other vulnerable groups in the community travelled to the city to participate in a travelling exhibition of rubbish art to share their experiences in rubbish recycling and disposal, forming the best case of knowledge co-creation and multi-party cooperation in building a zero-waste community and further empowering women. The non-recyclable parts of the rubbish are sent to the landfill built by the local government.
3. Reduce the amount of solid waste entering the environment through the 3R Waste Management Principles by at least 30,000 kg per year over the life of the project (2 years per project).

The association will make good use of Pazhuopa's experience of working with outside designers to develop zero-waste art products. With the help of professional partners such as the Sanjiangyuan Designer Alliance, the association will reuse rubbish such as waste wood, waste clothes, waste iron and other rubbish, and design household items suitable for local herders and toys for children, and at the same time design a series of environmental art installations based on the themes of snow-covered mountains, grasslands, and wildlife of the Sanjiangyuan.
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
These reused artworks and daily necessities will be made by the disabled, women and other disadvantaged groups in the community, and the designers will travel with them to Shanghai, Guangzhou and other mainland cities to take part in art travelling exhibitions, and the women in the community will share with the public their experience of recycling and treating rubbish from the Sanjiangyuan River, the hazards of rubbish, and the experience of rubbish reuse, so as to empower the disadvantaged groups in the community and to reduce the pollution of rubbish and to change the awareness of rubbish.
