Project Characteristics and Results
Gender Focus
Although the defense of the waters and the Gerais in the Fechos de Pasto of Western Bahia has been gaining prominence in the set of resistance actions undertaken by the Gerais communities, in most cases, due importance is not given to the role of women in guaranteeing the very existence of these communities. communities and their ways of life based on this socio-ecological-productive interaction. It turns out that women, in addition to being historically protagonists in the defense of their territories and in traditional activities of extractivism, agroecological production and pasture management, including the release of cattle in Gerais, end up being made invisible, with only the role they are given in domestic and care activities. In this way, the project can contribute to raising awareness among men and women who make common use of Fechos about the importance of women's participation both in Fechos monitoring actions and in the redefinition of the memory and tradition of Fechos and Geraizera communities. Furthermore, productive backyards and small vegetable gardens managed by women are fundamental to ensuring both the food security of their families and the expansion of family income. Support for the holding of family farming fairs will certainly contribute so that, by generating and/or increasing income, women can achieve greater economic and personal autonomy, as well as greater appreciation of their productive and agroecological work, fundamental for the continuity of traditional way of life of the communities and Fechos.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Firstly, it is important to highlight that although each Fecho presents its respective association, the Entity proposing this project acts jointly with the Fecho de Gado Bravo association with reciprocal relations between the two long-standing associations. In this way, it is understood that the protection of Tarto also favors Wild Cattle, and vice versa, justifying why a single project foresees the strengthening and protection of 2 territories. The project proposes to execute 3 specific objectives related to field activities, and a final objective related to administrative management. In the first 3 objectives, the activities basically focus on creating conditions for maintaining existing infrastructure in the territories, as well as carrying out monitoring activities. Another important point is related to raising awareness about the importance of traditional Geraizeiros ways of life (with emphasis on the symbolic appropriation of the territory by women and young people), and activities to enhance agroecological production and local culture. In this sense, for Specific Objective 1 ? Carry out improvements to the existing infrastructure and maintenance of fences and firebreaks at Fechos de Tarto and Gado Bravo, 3 activities are envisaged, these being (1) support for improvements at the Fecho do rancho. Tarto through a water supply system; (2) maintenance of existing fences in Tarto and Gado Bravo to protect the territory; and (3) maintenance of firebreaks in both territories to protect against forest fires. Specific Objective 2 ? Strengthen the monitoring of the territory of Fechos de Tarto and Gado Bravo, including raising awareness among families and purchasing equipment. It is understood that the acquisition of a car (motorcycle) and fuel is essential, which will enable the execution of the monitoring plan for the two territories throughout the execution of the project. Furthermore, the mobilization and awareness of families aims to exchange experiences of stories, memories and knowledge between the two closures. Specific Objective 3 ? Promote the commercialization of agroecological products and support the traditional culture of pasture closure communities by holding family farming fairs and cultural attractions, with an emphasis on the participation of young people and women, the idea is that there will be moments exchange of knowledge and cultural activities related to the production of family farming by closed families and the rich traditional culture of the region. In this way, the activities focus on the production of promotional materials for both the project's partner associations and the family farming fairs themselves. 4 family farming fairs will also be held in Povoado Aparecida do Oeste, the associations' area of activity, and 2 meetings will be held (opening and closing), with local cultural attractions and traditional festivals (reisados, celebrations, chula and local guitarist performances, etc. .) Finally, Specific Objective 4 ? Promote administrative, financial management and project execution, will pay for project execution work, pay administrative/accounting costs, and provide an environment for project management (internet, computer, printer , office desk, office cabinet, consumables).
