Strengthening the community management and monitoring of endemic bird through alternative livelihood.
Project Brief Description: The project to reduce the threats to overharvesting the threatened endemic bird for local protein sources. The inland of Tanna harvested wild Laef and small livestock for main protein sources in their daily meals.
In 2020 Birdlife International monitoring survey assessment reported a decline in the new nesting of the White Collared Petrel that roost on top of the range of Mountain on Tanna Island. In collaboration with the local community they declared a taboo over the mountain tops to stop the human disturbance and hunting activities in the areas, and also advocate for reduced gardening activities in the lower areas of the mountains. The project is to build local capacity to raise chicken and ducks in those communities to provide alternative protein sources for the local communities and so to reduce hunting in the wild areas.
