Sustainable Management of Shea Agroforestry Parklands for in Fufu, Apa-ola (Ilorin South LGA), Aladi and Igbo-owu (Ifelodun LGA) Communities of Kwara State, Nigeria
The project will be carried out in Fufu, Apa-ola (Ilorin South LGA), Aladi and Igbo-owu (Ifelodun LGA) communities of Kwara State, North-Central Nigeria. The estimated population of Fufu, Apa-ola, Aladi and Igbo-owu are 7,158, 3,455, 4,536 and 12,268 respectively. Agriculture is the mainstay of the economy in the area. Earnings from shea resource generate an average income of about 80-100 USD per month for the producers. Environmental issues include erratic rainfall, incessant bushfire and deforestation. All of these have also continued to impact negatively on the population status of shea trees. Thus, the project goal is to build the capacity of the local communities to sustainably manage the shea agroforestry parklands as well as strengthen income generation based on the shea tree resource. To this end, the project will involve the use of participatory conservation approach at addressing the threats faced by shea tree population in the selected communities. It will involve the raising and conservation of shea tree in farmers? fields as well as development of the shea value chain. The expected impact of the project is to restore and sustain the conservation of shea resources in four (4) communities across two LGAs in Kwara state. About one hundred and twenty (240) farmers would be trained on shea parkland management. Four (8) women cooperative groups focused on improving the income generation from shea business would also be established.
