Organic Backyard Garden Project (OBAGAP). Project Locations: Moniya in Akiny?le, Omi in Ido, Apata in Ibadan South West, Sango in Ibadan North, and Monatan in Ibadan North East LGAs, Oyo state.
In Oyo State Nigeria, Agriculture employs about 70% of the poorest population. Organic agriculture has no negative impact on the environment. Profits from organic farming has gradually been on the increase but farm lands are drastically reducing due to infrastructural development and effects of climate change. Yet organic farming is a very cost-effective means of reducing poverty in the shortest possible time. We aim to engage 500 poor and low-income families and unemployed youths (100 in each selected LGA) in building their capacity to drastically change the food production process. In 18 months, we would have empowered 500 direct citizens that will transform these communities through food production, processing, packaging and marketing initiatives thereby, addressing SDGs1,2,3,4,5,8,10,12,13,15 directly. The goal of this project is to provide technical support and trainings on home gardens establishment for 500 households on organic backyard/ home garden.
Project activities include: 1) Organize specialized 1-day participatory and hands-on trainings for the selected participants on organic backyard/ home garden through; 2) Establishment of cost-effectiveness organic home gardens using the resources in the environment; 3) Partnering with IITA (International Institute for Tropical Agriculture), to provide viable seeds and seedlings and other needed inputs; 4) Organize garden-based nutrition education and food demonstration session to improve participants? skill needed for farm-to-table; 5) Sharing of knowledge through practical planting and harvesting training
