Nongkhorn Reservoir Natural Resources Conservation
A wetland , Nongkhorn reservoir is situated within 2 km. of the Mekhong River.With the area of about 300 ha, the reservoir has been a sources for food and water for over 20 villages. For more than 40 years, the communities have been applying chemical fertilizer/pesticide in their fields at
so high a rate that its adverse effects are witnessed in the reservoir , in the cultivated land and subsequently in human bodies. The quantity of fishes are dwindling. To worsen the situation, when the population increases, so do the competition in fishing and destructive fishing.
Established in 1986 as a grass ? root organization, the Chiang Noi Organization for Development has implemented agricultural projects with its 32 members. The organization is a result of the effort of low-income community members. With its limited rotating fund, the organization has applied the participatory approach in executing its office.
Project goals or objectives (including GEF problem-area addressed by projects):
1.To launch campaigns raising conservation awareness of communities
2.To regulate over- fishing and consumption of other related species
3.To promote and strengthen indigenous occupation and community
Activities to be carried out under project:
1. Conducting a survey of the communities and assessment of natural resources
2.Providing training for communities on the following topics:
- fishery laws
- nursery of native species
- water quality monitoring
3. Producing pesticide from native plants, through solar heating process
4. Native fishes nursery to increase the amount of fishes in the reservoir
Project participants and/or beneficiaries:
1.Community members from 5 villages (640 families ) in the district
2.Ratanawapi Tambol Administrative Organization
3.District Agricultural Office
4.The District Public Health Office
5.The District Primary Education Office
Anticipated results of project:
1.The target population is instilled with conservation awareness being able to produce pesticide
for use from native plants
2.The target population acquires skill in fish and plant nursery and water quality monitor
3.There emerges a gender- oriented , persistent process of learning in community development
