ENHANCING CLIMATE RESILIENCE THROUGH SUSTAINABLE FOOD SECURITY, LIVELIHOOD AND WELFARE OF THE LOFEAGAI RURAL COMMUNITY SMALLHOLDERS FARMERS IN FUNAFUTI-TUVALU
This project is aimed to alleviate the problem of low-income farmers in the Lofeagi-northern district. Its is anticipated that the project will have two major component of production which are two standard farms a 64 square meter farm for vegetable production for 23 households and another 100 square meters of a vanilla for each of the 23 household as well. So, in the end, each of the twenty-three household of the targeted beneficiaries will each have a Vegetable standard far and a standard vanilla farm.
Altogether these two farms from all the 23 households in any one productive year can produce 30 tones of cabbages valued at the current price of $3/kg x 30000kg = $90,000 in a year. The Vanilla on the other has the potential from all the farms when productive in one year to produce 470 kilograms x the world current price of $USD58/kg = $USD27,260.00. These figures are reachable if all steps of these crops production are followed and monitored closely. However, downfalls will also be anticipated due to adverse climatic conditions that are unavoidable like droughts and cyclone. The message however here is the potential of this project to make a
change in the livelihoods and wellbeing of this targeted group in this community.
The key partners to assist the TOKIALOFA achieve its project objectives is the assistance and cooperation of the
both the department of Agriculture and Live & Learn as experience partners in this project. The project is asking for full request of project funds of AUD 40,000 and its only donation in kind is the amount of AUD 10,660 from
the expected labor cost in establishing the key infrastructure of the project which are the centralized nursery, 23 standard vegetable crops and the 23 standard Vanilla plot. The expected timeline to complete this project is 12 months but since most project materials and equipment will be procured overseas in Fiji and New Zealand, any delay of 5 to 6 months will elapse this duration to another 6 months with a new total timeline of 18months.
