Rice-Field Dike and Integrated Forest
The project location is situated in the Chee River basin which falls within the ecological reach of the Mekhong River. Long after the adoption of mono-crop system and its modern technology,
the natural resource in the area has become depleted and ecological system seriously altered.
Clearing the forest in order to obtain more land for cash crop was being practiced. In order to rush and ensure an expected yield, the application of chemical fertilizer/pesticide has always been exceeding the appropriate limit. The adverse consequences of the dual problem are witnessed both environmentally and in livelihood security.
Moreover, burning rice-field after harvest has become a common practice only a few years ago. The burning aims to get rid of (unwanted) biomass which impede the plowing process by machine. Every year after harvest , the burning fire in the fields can be seen almost everywhere and requires much effort to control. The burning unnecessarily adds to the atmosphere green house gas and pollutants.
Project goals or objectives (including GEF problem-area addressed by projects):
1.To promote the learning process of members of the group and other population on ?integrated forest on rice-field dike?
2.To promote environmentally-friendly agriculture
3.To rehabilitate the degraded soil and reduce the rate of chemical application in agriculture
Activities to be carried out under project:
1.Setting up mobile forum to launch ?No Deforestation , No Field Burning? campaign
2.Launching environmentally-friendly and integrated-forest-on-rice- field dike activities by members of the group
3.Training and demonstrating the process of making organic fertilizer
4.Conducting study tour on the concerned issue
Project participants and/or beneficiaries:
1.45 families of the group from 13 villages
2.Nong Waeng Soke Phra Tambol Administrative Organization
3.Agricultural cooperatives of Tambol Nong Waeng Soke Phra
4.Promotion of Agriculture Development for Self-reliance Project
Anticipated results of project:
1.Members have a chance to exchange experience and lessons learnt on agricultural activities at least once a month
2.All 45 members have access to supporting fund for activities satisfactorily in term of both amount and term.
3.All 45 members are self-reliant for fertilizer thus at least 30 % of chemical application would be reduced.
4.At least 5 more families in another village in the tambol will join the group.
