INDIGENOUS WOMEN OF NUKUFAELAE WATER SECURITY PROJECT IN NUKUFAELAE TUVALU
INDIGENOUS WOMEN OF NUKUFAELAE WATER SECURITY PROJECT IN NUKUFAELAE TUVALU
The project of objective is to provide water tank for 30 households in the Island of Nukulalae. There is constant droughts and they have become prolonged throughout leading to the complete destruction of our traditional root crops plantations. Further, it is difficult to keep our livestock alive given that there is not enough water for them either. Given that the boat does not consistently follow the shipping schedule it is difficult to ascertain how and when the water supply is to be rationed.
This project will contribute to SGP Country programme strategy by achieving water security. It relates directly to the SUSTINABLE DEVELOPMENT PLAN TE KETE 2021-2030 as there is so much emphasis placed on developing the outer islands and improving water catchment.

Nukulaelae is the smallest indigenous community comprising of over 300 people permanently residing on the island with about 70 households. Given the lack of space, land issues and prolonged droughts it is vital to procure more water tanks for each household on island. There is only one water cistern to cater for the island should there be a drought. This is insufficient given that there are more homes being built on the islets in order to safeguard should there be disease breakouts on the main island.
Objective

Expected results: there will be water security for the entire island
Target site: residential rea on Fagaua
Community involved: indigenous Nukulaelae entire community
