Community involvement in biodiversity conservation and livelihood development in Kpedze and Akorme
Community involvement in biodiversity conservation and livelihood development in Kpedze and Akorme
3. Project Objectives, Results/Outputs, and Activities

? (i) To stem land degradation by sensitizing the communities against bush fires, slash and burn and destructive use of agro-chemicals and in organic fertilizers

(ii) To restore the Vegetative cover through agro-forestry, tree planting, wood lot development and the use of energy efficient cook stoves.

(iii) To conserve the biodiversity through climate action activities and sustainable livelihood interventions such as bee keeping, fruit tree cultivation and woodlot.

? (i) By the end of the Project 4 basic schools will have been given sufficient education on bush fires, slash and burn farming and the disadvantages of fuelwood harvesting and charcoal production. Environmental clubs will be formed.

By the end of the Project 60 people will have been trained in these two sustainable live hood skills of bee keeping and the construction of energy efficient cookstove, for clean energy usage and the prevention of reliance on fuelwood. The training will involve the following categories of persons, in numbers and percentage.

Women 21 35
Youth 24 40
People with disabilities 6 10
The Aged 9 15
60 100%

(ii) By the end of the project, 5 acres each of the underlisted economic trees will have been planted yield fruits farm, to bost wealth creation, protect the environmental and create nectar as a source for bees.
? Citrus
? Avocado
? Coconut
? Guava
? Sour Sop

(iii) By the end of project 10 acres of cassia will have been planted to serve as training ground for agro-forestry practices and woodlot plantation.

(iv) By the end of project, 40 hives will have been constructed and people trained on bee management for honey production. Training will have been given in harvesting, processing, packaging and marketing.

3.1 Project Outputs and Activities:
? (i) A minimum of 720 basic school pupils will have acquired the rudiments of environmental conservation, with educational hand buts prepared and distributed to guide and effect a change in behavior and 4 training sessions will have been organized in the 4 basic schools.

(ii) Two training session will provide hand-on practical training for the construction of cook stoves. Training materials will have to be provided, such as the clay setting and molding tools will be provided. At least 240 stoves will have been produced to serve as samples for replication.

(iii) Seedlings would have to been provided to feed the fruit fields. Nurses for seedlings constitute activities to kick start the field work; and it is expected that 5000 seedlings will be produced for the fruit field while 15,000 seedlings of acacia will be provided to feed the 10 acres fuelwood plantation/ woodlot.

(iv)40 bee hives will have been installed. This will require procurement of wood and other materials for the construction of the hives. Bating will have to be done when hives are installed.
