Water Buffalo Restoration for Energy
Water Buffalo Restoration for Energy
In the past much of the rural area in northeast Thailand was of agriculture where population earned their livings through rice and other vegetable planting as well as livestock for food and
farming labour. As a result of government policy on cash crop about half a century ago couple with population growth / globalization and the recent financial crisis ( mid-1997), the rural environment has been drastically changed. Farming by livestock (Water buffaloes) has almost totally been replaced by machinery (small tractors). Environment in farmlands and water resources has been affected by chemicals. Vast-scale field burning to facilitate farming practice is common throughout the region. Agriculture has become the least- appealing occupation.

With the fuel for small tractor apt to increase and price for agricultural products unfavourable in conjunction with the comprehensible Green House Effect imposing its threat, rural communities must apply a means to regulate the situation for sustainable livelihood.

Project goals or objectives (including GEF problem-area addressed by projects):

1.To contribute to the stabilization of Green House Gas Emission from agricultural sector by bringing back to use water buffaloes in farming practice
2.To promote the use of buffalo manure in farming replacing chemicals
3.To increase the dwindling number of livestock (buffaloes) in the project location

Activities to be carried out under project:

1.Building capacity of target community on energy conservation/renewable energy through seminar, training and study tours
2.Building capacity of target community on livestock disease
3.Demonstrating activities to reduce diesel oil consumption in agricultural practice

Project participants and/or beneficiaries:

1.The population along the river is the direct beneficiary
2.The Centre for Environmental Health, Region 6
3.Kud Nam Sai Tambol Administrative Organization
4.Phong River Ecological Recovery & Development Project

Anticipated results of project:

1.The diesel fuel consumption will be reduced by 50 % /year/ family.
2.The quantity of chemical fertilizer consumption will be reduced by 250 kg./family/year
3.There emerge ?model families? for alternative agriculture.
4.The number of ? model families? is increasing through the adoption of buffalo offspring
