Pilot Project of Explore Community Tourism to Support Community Protection Action in Jiajin Village, Xiaojin County, Sichuan Province

The project hopes to promote the learning and understanding of the relationship between biodiversity conservation and community tourism in the village of Jiaojin, assist the community in sorting out the natural and cultural tourism resources, enhance the community's understanding of biodiversity, and on this basis, promote the community to formulate and implement the action plan for community tourism based on biodiversity conservation, enhance the community's capacity to receive tourism, and promote the village of Jiaojin to use part of its tourism revenue to support the development of biodiversity biodiversity conservation actions, build up the financial sustainability of the community to carry out biodiversity conservation actions and the autonomous management capacity of the community's protected areas, and contribute to the mitigation of threats to local biodiversity.

Project Characteristics and Results

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Eventually, it will be in the form of a case report as an externally shared knowledge product, presenting the process and practices, outputs and effectiveness, major findings and experiences of this project, etc. The sharing and dissemination methods include the following: (1) Summarize the project case and diffuse the project findings and project experience through workshops and forums related to community conservation and rural revitalization. (2) Use the project summary report and experience results for capacity building of social organizations. (3) Summarize some key findings and specific practices into publicity articles and publish them in appropriate social media to expand the social impact of project results and project knowledge. (4) Utilize partners' communication channels to diffuse knowledge to the society.

Gender Focus

The project is a female-oriented community project. Relying on the women's groups formed in the previous phase of the project, it promotes women's greater participation in livelihood improvement activities, which, while focusing on environmental and ecological protection, is conducive to strengthening women's family and social status, and will benefit the elderly and children in the family. The project will promote the allocation of a certain percentage of tourism revenues to community welfare funds, which will be used to support women-led community welfare and community protection initiatives, which will not only increase women's opportunities to participate in the management of public affairs in the community, but also provide more assistance to vulnerable groups in the community.

Capacity - Building Component

The project will promote villagers' learning, design and implementation of community tourism activities through community-led exploration and experimentation of environmentally friendly community tourism to improve the tourism reception and self-management capacity of rural communities in ethnic areas. The main approaches are: (1) The project design has a portion of the funds to the village to be used entirely by the community in accordance with the project objectives, and Shuguang is highly concerned with establishing a sense of ownership and mastery of the community. (2) We try to push the communities to do what they can do, while Shuguang only plays the role of coordinating, assisting and accompanying them. (3) Pay attention to community participation in key aspects, including community identification of problems faced, community discussion, research and determination of solutions, community development and implementation of action programs, and community evaluation of the success of their projects. (4) Pay attention to promoting the community's habit of consulting to reach consensus and then taking collective action, forming and maintaining a long-term passion for community participation, and enhancing the sustainability of community participation.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project will support the exploration and experimentation of community-led, environmentally friendly community tourism in the village of Jiejin, where local villagers can learn about, observe, and participate in the entire process of the project, providing villagers with additional sources of livelihoods beyond the traditional farming industry and the simple provision of tourist accommodations. At the same time, some of the villagers who are deeply involved in the project are able to obtain part of the income from tourism, which makes the source of livelihood more diversified. The public welfare funds derived from the tourism income will be used for the management and maintenance of the community reserve, and villagers' traditional livelihoods, such as yak farming, will also be indirectly assisted.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The vast majority of the villagers in the project village are Tibetans, and the implementation of the project is conducive to helping the villagers explore community tourism as an alternative upgrade path to improve their income conditions and sustainability
