Enhancing Urban-Environmental-Sustainability Through Fighting Climate-Change-Impact with Total Community Engagement.
The project responds to serious natural resource degradation in Ndirande hills. Deforestation in the hill is undeniable truth that has fallen upon the residents in the township and other surrounding communities. The once evergreen Ndirande hill is today as bare as soccer field. The mountain has for long being illegally used as a source of firewood for either cooking or burning bricks by the surrounding communities which negatively affect its ecosystem and turned the area into a desert. Forestry experts say out of 700 hectares of the hill, more than 500 hectares have been encroached by people doing farming, firewood and constructing houses. As if the deforestation is not bad enough, people have turned the only river that originates from Ndirande Mount (Nasolo river) their disposal dumping site. As a result, in the rainy season the Nasolo changes into a dangerous current, sweeping away chickens and children, bridges and houses(www.ndirande.com).
Our project "Enhancing urban-environmental-sustainability by Fighting the Impact of climate change through full community participation" aims to mitigate the problems faced by the residents of Ndirande(floods) that are mainly caused by deforestation (in Mount Ndirande) as well as improper waste disposal that have turned the Nasolo River into a garbage dump.
Approved by the National Steering Committee meeting held on 11th November 2022, the project aims to conserve 20% of the Nasolo River and Ndirande Mountain in Ndirande township through mechanisms that will reduce deforestation by 15%, reforestation (planting) of 20,000 trees as well as preventing/reducing the continued dumping of waste into Nasolo River 35%.
