1.The network committee gained insight about the geographic & environmental condition of the project area, two were able to be trainers on model-making. The model was used in formulating conservation plan and public relation.
2. There emerged two nursery sites in the project area.
3. The area under wild-fire was reduced by 240 ha compared to the previous year.

Participatory Evaluation: Carried out on March 29, 2001 and May 16, 2001.

Methods:

1.Conducting open forum amongst target communities, committee members and concerned government officers, during the life of the project to summarize the progress, problems and issues
2.Meeting to devise indicators of attainment, amongst network committee members and forestry officers.

Problems & Issues:

1.The locations of target communities are mountainous area with few or no direct routes of communication.Therefore, 10 km. apart can become 75 km. rendering the coordination work very inefficient. In this regards, the project management had decided to decentralize the administration into three zones.
2.Misconduct on financial matters of some key member had resulted in doubt and less participation from network members. This issue was addressed by convening meeting to summarize lessons learnt and conducting study tour which secured participation from these members.
3.The mentality of community members ,especially young generation which stresses on materialism and consumerism, coupled with the failure in the expected agricultural yield, had resulted in inadequate participation.
4.Network members have personal limitation such as being key leaders of the villages, limitation on household economy, and lack of skill for managing the organization.

Impact:

In general, the project had successfully initiated the conservation of environment and natural resources in the project area which produced effects as follows:

1.Effect on Community

Based on the survey for the status and data of community forest, several neighbouring communities and new network members had exhibited awareness in natural resources conservation. Through coordination with responsible local government units, conservation areas were demarcated, community forest rules/regulation formulated, additional communities established. However, there were something worthy of note: the expectation to be awarded the grant from ?SIF? of the Thai government could be an incentive for the eagerness.

There emerged new community leaders carrying out conservation activities together with the network committee.

Community members, youth and women had exhibited conservation awareness through making fire-break zone, putting out wild-fire when happened, and literature.

2.Effect on the Capacity of the Network

Each participatory evaluation had reflected the development of mentality of community leaders. Threats to harmonious living had been realized and thoughts for holistic address discussed. The fabricated model had been proven very useful as medium for planning and coordinating with related organizations in a long term.

3. Effect on Environment

There had been little change since no rehabilitating activities such as reforestation was carried out. But the wild-fire area was reduced by 240 ha.

4. Effect on Local Government Units

- Community Schools: Environmental education was proceeding through actual practice in the nursery, and student campings.
- Forestry Office: The network received regular supports from the offices in the form of public relation / coordination for wild-fire protection. The office participated in the participatory evaluation process and conservation activities as well as supplied resources persons.
-TAO / Community Leaders: The network informed the TAO about the undertaken activities and invited community leaders to participate in major activities such as summarizing lessons learnt and planning seminars. As a result, two TAOs were interested in the conservation plan and had proposed to allocated budget for rehabilitating & conserving natural resources and environment. One of these TAOs had fabricated a model for its use by following the example of the network.
