Promotion of Community Approaches and Capacities for Sustainable Environment
With around 1,280 ha of cultivated area and 343 families, the project location is one resembling
a northeastern village in the country of which over 90 % of the population are farmers and of which environmental problems stem from non-meticulous application of modern technology.
Of the farming population, 90 % has adopted small tractors to replace the indigenous water buffalo use. This has added to the production cost since the yield is not increasing and price of fuel for tractors comparatively high. Besides, without water buffaloes in use, there is no free and natural fertilizer for the soil ,prompting farmers to resort to chemical fertilizer which , again, adds up to the production cost. With the currently low price of agricultural products, almost all farmers have run into heavy debt.
In one year, a family consumes approximately 240 litres of diesel oil plowing the land, pumping water, harvesting and commuting between home to farmland. In addition, there are 45 families earning supplementary income by producing noodle for sales. Annually for one family, this process consumes 120 cu. metres of fire-woods, without any substantiated reforestation. These patterns of energy use has contributed to the accumulation of the Green House Gas: the root cause of climatic variance.
This project will contribute to the benefits of global environment by trying stabilizing of GHG emission through reduction of fossil fuel use and efficient burning of fire-woods.
Project goals or objectives (including GEF problem-area addressed by projects):
To demonstrate local approaches in the reduction of Green House Gas emission and simultaneously improve quality of life
Activities to be carried out under project:
1.Providing training for community to instill conservation awareness and other energy-related Issues
2.Putting in to use water buffalo in agricultural practice
3.Improving the efficiency of fire-woods stoves in the noodle-making process
Project participants and/or beneficiaries:
1.Members of two saving groups in the project location
2.Members of two community stores in the project location
3.Salaengphan Tambol Administrative Organization
4.Lampliamart District Government Office
Anticipated results of project:
1.Reduction of diesel fuel consumption of 2,000 litres in the first year
2.Reduction of fire-woods consumption of 1,440 cu.metres per year
