The project location is situated in the east coast basin , a portion of the bigger ecosystem of the Gulf of Thailand. while a great portion of the area are agricultural land, there still are dense forests which are watersheds and so called ? the area of a hundred rivers ?.

In 1989, the project area had been devastated by the Typhoon ?Gay? which rendered the area under degrading condition. Even though up to now, the area has been slowly reclaimed, the rate of encroachment and deforestation have exceeded the rate of reclamation. Consequently, the area has become drier during the summer months and under swift and devastating deluge during rainy ones. There is less water for agriculture when required.

A private volunteer organization whose members comprise youth groups and community leaders and that are active in the locality, the club has initiated the project to reclaim the watershed areas. In a longer term this will solve the problem of water shortage in agriculture as well as reclaim the ecology of the project location. Eventually, the livelihood of the communities will be secured through long term conservation plan.

Project goals or objectives (including GEF problem-area addressed by projects):

1.To instill conservation awareness in youths and community members
2.To encourage participation from youths and community members in managing environment and natural resources
3.To establish an institution which will serve as a centre for target population

Activities to be carried out under project:

1.Conducting survey , assessment and compilation of community?s needs vs. project location
2.Organizing training course and seminar for target population
3.Supporting the formation of conservation groups in the project location
4.Launching reforestation and demarcation of the forests

Project participants and/or beneficiaries:

1.Two tambol administrative organizations
2.Pathiw District Office , forestry Office and Chumphorn Provincial Nursery Office
3.Forest Protection Unit, under the Chumphorn Provincial Forestry Office

Anticipated results of project:

1.There emerge at least 4 new conservation groups. Each group comprises at least 30 members.
2.There is a clear boundary between cultivated land and conservation land.
3.There emerges a continuous plan for rehabilitating and managing natural resources and environment through the tambol administrative organization which is a legal entity at grass root level.
