The completion report was received on 7 November 2001, summarizing the following immediate outputs and results:

1. Emergemce pf compiled indigenous knowledge on the management of natural resources which is a
result of participatory research.
2. The target 210 families adopted alternative agricultural practices.
3. There emerges plan for natural resources and alternative agriculture management in 5 network
members.
4. There emerge 5 key volunteers who are experienced in R & D to continuously monitor the going-on
activities
5. Emergence and continuity of the green market

Impact: The green market in Had Yai District was the outstanidng outcome of the project. After establising for just more than a year, it was found out that the appropriate management approach of the market should be consistent with the pattern of life and capacity of target population.The approach should be flexible.In the management, the demand and supply should be directly related- versatile supply with appropriate quantity.

The project was visited by the NC , PA, two members of NSC and a project leader of THA-98-G09 where the findings and observation were as follows:

1.In Had Yai District Town, the visiting team had visited the ?Green Market? arranged every Saturday by members of the network from 3 neighbouring provinces. Here chemical-free vegetable was being sold to public and it enjoyed numerous, regular customers. The network intended the market to be an outlet for products and a model for its members so that they could replicate thus makes the project sustainable.

2. Ban (village ) Hu Rae, one of the five participating communities, had established the Seedling Centre for selling and exchanging seedlings amongst network members and general population. A brief visit to the plot of one member had witnessed the potential of both cultivated area and communities. In the very near future, this community was supposed to be responsible for the management of the green market.( Currently, the market was being managed jointly by various groups of the network and with the support from the network.)

3.The watershed area in Ban Thung Nui, another participating community, was
comparatively in good condition. The area supplied water all year round for both household consumption and agriculture. Though some portions of the area had been turned into cultivated land, the practice applied was fairly environmentally-friendly i.e. using water from the mountain , planting native species and applying less or not-at-all chemical substance. Periodically, community members took shifts to patrol the area to guard against any environmentally destructive activities.

4. The office of the network was also being used as a training centre for members. Apart from disseminating and encouraging local & alternative approaches for agriculture, the network encouraged participation of womens? group, especially in the processing of agri-products and other household consuming goods.

The network has presented a video displaying key members of the 5 participating groups traveling to various villages to conduct preliminary assessment of natural resources and relevant existing capacity of villagers by applying a participatory approach.

COMMENTS

The activity on compilation of local approaches and natural resources using computerized system was a notable one. In Thailand, this might be the first time at community-level such a database would be established. However, the network had limited fund to procure the equipment for every group. Currently, the network was expecting donation from computer venders who would be providing used equipment for upgrading and repair then installed at the communities.

It was also learnt that the network had been assisted technically by the Research and Development Division of the Bank of Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperative (BAAC) - a stakeholder of Thailand GEF/SGP.
