Conservation and Rehabilitation of Nong Leng Sai
Situated in Mae Jai District of Chiangrai Province and with area about 1,000 ha, Nong Leng Sai is the most important natural reservoir in the district which supplies water for household consumption , agriculture and food.It also constitutes the catchment area of the Ing River draining into the famous Kwan Phayao Reservoir and meets the Mekhong River at Chiangkhong District.
At present, the reservoir has encountered the environmental problems which range from excessive chemical run-off from agricultural practices, decreasing water species, destructive fishery and land degradation in term of soil compaction.
13 villages in the 4 tambols directly depending upon the reservoir for livelihood need to be alerted of the degrading situation while their capacity must be simultaneously built to cope with the situation and be able to plan the sustainable use of the existing natural resources.
