Adaptation of Agriculture Production Process in Upper Lang Suan River Basin

The project location is situated in the east coast basin, an ecological component of the gulf of Thailand. It is a watershed area of the Lang Suan River draining into the gulf. There are small tributaries of the river passing through the communities.

With the cultivated area of about 3,160 ha, nearly all 425 families earn their living through agricultural practices. The main crops encourage is coffee which constitutes approximately 30 % of all other fruit trees.

Similar to the prevailing environmental problems of other regions of Thailand, the project location has been facing with forest encroachment for more coffee plantation and excessive application of chemical substance in agriculture. The flow rate of water in the river and its tributaries has been gradually decreasing while the quality of the water is degraded by the chemical run-off from agricultural activities. Project Characteristics and Results

Project Results

1.There were 180 families participating in the demonstration of sustainable agricultural system
carrying out activities as follows:
- Creating learning process
- Launching R & D
- Supporting product processing & disseminating
2. Research paper on agricultural system suitable for small-scale farmers
3. Emergence of Centre for Education on Herbs ,open for public ? more centres are being built.

Participatory Evaluation: ( conducted on 12 February , 2001)

Methods: One-day open forum
Participants: Representatives of communities and committee members from 8 villages making total number of participants to be 37.

Impact:

1. The project approach/result have been expanded into three other villages in the vicinity.
2. Emergence of two major networks: Women?s Friend for Lang Suan Basin Network comprising 10 groups from 150 families undertaking food processing and Mae Lae Conservation Network carrying out conservation activities. The two networks were further supported financially by the government?s Community Organization Development Institute
3. Support and cooperation form government agencies such as TAOs , District Public Health Office, Kasetsart University and Thailand Research fund

The chronic problem of debt and ever-increasing cost of production still remain and prompt the communities to work harder. However, it seemed, the harder they work, the more problems arise. The introduction of alternative agriculture offered a solution in which a few members had been practicing successfully.

The one-year project had enabled the communities to analyze the approaches for the future which include the introduction of appropriate community capacity into the collective development plan.

Future Plan:

1. Keeping up building capacity of each participating community on management of natural resources, agriculture and occupation and other related community activities so that they become models for development
2. Disseminating the idea of models for development to communities both near and faraway
3. Coordinating/cooperating with other environment stakeholders in Chiangrai Province on information/experience sharing aiming to realize the collective natural resources management
